Daniels getting more minutes than expected?

High basketball IQ, multidimensional,” Rivers said. “I mean, he can do so many different things. He can play the 2 and 3 for us. And he may be our best defender at the 1, 2 and 3. Rondo is the best (guarding point guards), but he’s right behind him.

“I didn’t like coaching against him. And when you don’t like coaching against a guy, you try to get him.”

Daniels is now in an environment that appears to be playing to his strengths. He always has been an above-average defender. Now he’s surrounded by similar quality defenders

Doc overrating Daniels to the fullest there. I thought he was talking abuot LeBron there for a sec...lol..jk
The guy is good..but wow..he hasn't even played a game for us yet, and is our best defender in 3 positions? He isn't even a better defender than Pierce(When he sets his mind too it)...but yeah he is going to play alot this year..at the Celtics scrimmage a couple days back, he played point for a good while. Even when Eddie was in there, he was the PG and Eddie the SG. Alot is said about Rasheed, but our real 6th man will be Quisy IMO..

Cant wait to see how he goes, glad that Doc likes him so much.. that more than anything will mean he should get big minutes, and ray/paul can get some extra rest each night

well i expected him to get around 25-30 mins/gm, and i think that's what he'll get. not sure what others were expecting.

i've always liked daniels, i think he's underrated just because he's a guard that can't hit the 3 and chicks (and mediaheads) dig the longball.

i also like that doc is giving him the majority of backup pg mins. i think that the quis/house backcourt can do some damage.

Daniels actually has better scoring numbers than Sheed, and is probably his equal on defense, and gives us that versatility so House can play off the ball. And of course Daniels is younger. I always thought Quis was the bigger acquisition. This has been a really good offseason.

I always expected about 28.

Rondo 36 / Daniels 12
Ray 32 / Eddie 16
Paul 32 / Daniels 16

And about that, I didn't realize he actually played pf in college and in high school. So it would stand to reason he didn't venture far out of the paint. It definitely contributes to why his in-between and midrange game is so good for a guard. He's still learning how to increase his range like Rondo.

I think he's a much better fit for this team than Grant Hill would have been, and Eddie at least should be glad to have him as a teammate.

Daniels is a better defender when guarding the small forward position than Pierce. That's news to me...

Last time I'd checked, Daniels got lit up by Ray when he was with Indiana. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Foh058IR3hE

I doubt Daniels is the best defending option for Boston for guarding against the shooting guard, small forward and point guard positions. Maybe. Actually, isn't Tony supposed to be one of the team's best defenders.

Still, he [Daniels] might be good against certain players, his height and length helps. But seeing is believing...

I haven't watched any of the pre-season games, has Daniels played more at point guard or small forward? I've a feeling if Tony can get healthy and crack the rotation, Daniels will see most of his minutes at point guard and small forward with House and Tony as backup shooting guards.

I don't have a problem with Rivers seeing Daniels as a viable option to backup Rondo. However, I hope Daniels has skills that allow him to be more than a player who simply brings the ball up the court. Can he be a facilitator, can he ward off pesky point guards who'll likely be shorter than him.

Why is Doc overrating this guy? After watching his play in the preseason, I was anything but impressed. Give him 15-18 mins a game max.

^^ You shouldn't judge a guy after a few pre season games, in which Daniels stomach was bothering him for 2 of those games. I've watched Daniels in Dallas and Indiana to know that he is a good player. It might take him some time to adjust to the new team.

I can understand how some people would watch the preseason games and come out thinking...eh he's not all that but you have to look beyond stats and flashy plays.

Doc put him in as the pg with the starters and it looked so good that Doc immediately took the starters out. He doesn't want to give our opponents any game film on it but he was def. happy with what he saw. His vision is crazy and he's going to eat up opposing teams second units. Like the play the other night where he penetrated in the lane, they collapsed and he hit eddie in the corner wide open...We are about to be unstoppable this year. The only thing stopping us would be injuries. knock on wood.

This thread sounds like a bunch of people who have primarily studied only Celtics players...Daniels is a 25+ minute player who can handle multiple positions quite well - he has limitations, but lineup combinations to off-set those limitations will be very easy with Boston's existing roster.

His jack-of-all-trades game is ideally suited for off-setting the weaknesses of other players on this roster - particularly his ability in pick-and-roll and ISO situations...

The man can score the ball when things break down and knows how to play system basketball - this is a great signing and definitely going to be a big minutes guy....health being his one downside...

Doc has a thing for tall PGs. If he can really perform as advertised at that spot he could see alot of minutes there. And there are indeed some definite advantages for a tall PG. Reece Gaines might have been a bust but Daniels is likely to make Doc giddy.

That's why I for one wouldn't be shocked if instead of re-upping Rondo for a huge contract we re-up Daniels and bring a bigger stronger guy in to play the point with him. Both Doc and Danny spent some time at PG. Both were bigger then average (Doc at 6'4" and Danny at 6'5") and both could shoot.

I have always felt that while the C's love Rondo's talent - role wise he isn't what they would prefer..

I take it it's becoming a misconception to view Daniels as a backup small forward. Sounds like his addition is more to the benefit of House than Pierce. This reminds me of when Boston had Posey. He was a backup small forward but, I believe, the majority of his minutes for the season came when playing power forward.

Perhaps, R. Wallace or G. Davis could see some time at small forward.

I don't think they like Daniels quite that much. Rondo already won out over one taller combo guard in D West and West is as good or better than Marquis.

Daniels is great as a swiss army bench player. He really helps House and keeps us flexible defensively while giving us another scoring option when we really need a hoop. As soon as you make him a full-time starter his master-of-none deficiencies will be much more apparent. He's not a Doc or Ainge level player.
