Patrick Mills

Post#1 » by ocker » Thu Oct 15, 2009 2:01 pm

According to draft net

'A source close to Patrick Mills informed NBADraft.net late Tuesday that Mills will most likely be waived by the Trailblazers this Friday so that they can sign Nigerian and former Spurs defensive standout Ime Udoka'

http://www.nbadraft.net/node/13498

Do you think there is any chance that the celtics could pick him up? He was drafted a few picks ahead of Lester Hudson and i personally believe he could help the Celtics more. However my view is a little bias seeing as im a Aussie and would really like to see Patty get picked up. Your thoughts?

Interesting - there is absolutely a chance I think. However I personally think Doc and Danny look for bigger point guards. TA has the body they want in a PG. Still Mills has the talent to make them think twice about that.

Also do you think the celtics would've drafted Mills if he had fallen to them?

But they haven`t signed him yet, right? So they don`t need to waive him since he doesn`t take up a roster spot...They owe his rights that is it...

If he really wants to play in the NBA this year and not in Europe (and blazers don`t want him) they can trade his rights, waiving him doesn`t make sense to me...

I think the Celts would've drafted him if he fell to 58. He was projected in the first round all year. I like Hudson better though and think has has potential as a spark plug off the bench like E-House, except he can slash to the basket.

Celtics are going to have their eye on bigger prizes such as Antonio Daniels. Minny has said they would trade him for matching expiring contracts. So far know one has stepped up and made a trade with Minny. Antonio Daniels is getting no playing time this preseason for the Wolves. I could see a buyout happening before the season starts. I'm sure the Celtics would have interest in Antonio Daniels for the vet min.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=A ... eam_report

• G Antonio Daniels(notes) and C Mark Blount(notes) are not in camp and their agents have been given permission to find work with other teams. If their agents cannot arrange a trade, the Wolves are expected to buyout each player out of his expiring contract.

POR has to either keep or waive Mills, unless for some bizarre reason he wants them to keep his rights.

No, I don't think Boston would waive Hudson for Mills or have drafted Mills ahead of Hudson. I think Hudson has answered the biggest question mark already does he walk on the floor and belong? His skill set as a slasher/defender make him more valued by Ainge and Rivers, both guys can shoot, score and handle. Obviously I am sure he said the same things about Oriene Greene and Gabe Pruitt, but Doc seems to really like Hudson as a player. I don't dislike Mills but I don't think he is ready to walk on the floor and play in the NBA and help a team, he has almost no idea how to play defense and may struggle having to adjust to an offense that isn't all about him.

Mills doesn't fit Ainge's draft profile.
No way we would have taken him over Hudson.
And given what Hudson has shown, there is doubly no way we would drop Les to get Patty Mills.

Ainge was apparently high on this kid before the draft. If I'm not mistaken, he suffered an injury over the summer. Can't say I know too much about him, but he did look impressive in his highlight reels. Looks really quick.

http://celticshub.com/2009/06/27/breaking-down-the-cs-non-deals/

Another name that apparently intrigued Ainge was St. Mary’s point guard Patrick Mills, who went three spots ahead of Boston to Portland.

With that said, I find it odd that they'd cut this kid loose considering they have Fernandez, Batum, Webster and Outlaw all fighting for time at the 3-spot. Then again, the Blazers also have Blake, Miller and Bayless at the PG spot too. :dontknow:

Mills is unsigned he isn't even POR's camp. So at this point he could go overseas though unlikely or he will be a FA. But my guess he is going to have to go the D league route or get lucky with a team needing to fill out its roster because he is going to be too far behind to step in and help someone and he needs minutes.

This is sort of surprising since a lot of people were big on Mills and thought he went too low. He did break he hand this summer, I think, and that has out him behind. The Balzers don't really need him anyway, but they sure draft well. I'm sure some team will pick him up. However, Hudson's had the full camp to work with the team and I think he's here to stay-- at least for this year.

Basically, I'd rather be trying to get Udoka.

Patrick mills
Weaknesses: Lack of size and strength ... Not a true PG at this point as he is better at scoring than running a team ... Relies too much on his outside shot and can be a very inconsistent shooter .338 3PT% ... Takes too many contested and wild shots ... Questionable decision maker. Has to do a better job of attacking the rim and finishing under pressure ... Avoids contact under the basket ...

vs.
lester hudson
Weaknesses: Has not played at a high level of basketball, with just one season of Div 1 under his belt at UT Martin ... Playing in the Ohio Valley Conference, his exploits are questioned ... It's tougher to project him for the next level playing against lesser players ... Ends up playing off the ball a bit because hes so effective scoring ... He shows quality passing and ball handling ability, but can he run a team? ...Must develop his point guard instincts, controlling tempo and overall PG duties ... Still needs to prove himself as a floor general. Very creative passing the ball, but will need to cut down on turnovers ... Not incredibly explosive. He's a strong athlete without question but is quicker and stronger than he is explosive ... Will turn 24 in August, which diminishes his intrigue some ... His long road to Div 1 basketball is a story of perseverance, but also leaves scouts with cause for concern ... Having lacked structure and discipline for a few years following high school, Hudson appears to be a changed man with a new found maturity ...

funny how even the weakness say good things about him..

I agree we wouldn't have drafted mills nor do I think we'd release hudson for him.
The more I see hudson the more I like him. Man danny gets good 2nd rounders.(for the most part)

Patty will be the better player then Lester, i spent seasons playing with and against him...
Hes got a crazy work ethic, but to this point hes done it on talent alone, australian and lower level college coaches can only develop him so far

Portland is going to miss out by waving him, i would love to see him in green and he would impress right off the bat IMO

Ainge liked Mills, Hudson, and Green. Green was his number 1 choice. Hudson was the 2nd. But he still liked Mills.

Mills is very talented. Problem for him there are alot of PGs that can play. Even Hudson at the 58th pick looks like he could play a bit. That almost never happens with centers. You pick a center with that late a pick usually they don't do anything..

Not to change the topic... but doesn't Hudson look like a combination of Dee Brown and Shawn Kemp morphed as one as if in Michael Jackson's "Black and White " video?!

For the record, I do like what I've seen from Lester so far this preseason. He doesn't look completely timid and is trying to make his mark on this team. One thing that stands out is when he dived to save the ball from going out of bounds a couple games ago.

I believe Mills is injured at the moment, but...

Here is why I am a fan of this pick up. He just turned 21, and...

Here is a link to the NCAA's assist % leaders for last season during in-conference games (when the level of competition is somewhat controlled).

http://statsheet.com/mcb/players/stats/ ... =2008-2009

Of players who were recognized as potential draft picks, the list goes:

1.) Eric Maynor
2.) Stephen Curry
3.) Patrick Mills
4.) Nick Calathes
5.) Johnny Flynn
6.) Ty Lawson

Reading up on his strengths/weaknesses, he sounds, to me, to be similar to Jameer Nelson. That doesn't excite me, but for a cheap pick up I'd love to see him on our roster...

The difference is that Jameer Nelson is a great shooter and Mills shoots like his great but isn't. He has the combo guard skills to be enough of a pg to play mins even though he isn't a true pg the problem is that he isn't a good enough shooter to really justify all the shots he squeezes off. I think that Mills could become and NBA player he just isn't, but I also think the Hudson would blow him off the court right now.
