[Comment From Steve D in Salem]
Jackie, Who realisitcally can we look at that the C's might make a move for in the big upcoming FA class? Obviously the Wades and Bosh's seem way out of reach. Is tehre anyone in the same discussion that we could look at? And would we move Ray if that name became available?

Jackie MacMullan: Hey everybody - Sorry, we had some technical difficulties, but we're ready to go now. It will be interesting to see what the Celtics decide to do in the long awaited summer of 2010. First of all, they have to decide whether to bring Ray Allen back at a reduced rate - or at all. Danny set up this run with the New Three in such a way that Allen's contract expires first, then Pierce, then Garnett. It is designed to let Allen go. But Ray is different than most 30-something guards. He takes incredible care of himself and might be the exception to the rule that shooting guards don't age gracefully (reggie miller would the be the other). But, if they do retain Allen, you can't forget about Wade or Bosh or anyone else of that caliber and there's no doubt in my mind Ainge thinks he should make every effort to make a play for one of them. LeBron is another story. I'll be stunned if he goes anywhere.

He's defiantly bringing Ray back. Even at 33+, Ray spreads the floor like no other.

It is a longshot. But Ainge and Wyc have both made statements indicating that a serious effort could be made to get a top free agent. Now Jackie MacMullen who has good sources, confirms the same thing.

First win #18.
Then reload for #19.
That would be ideal.

Unless they take the Mid Level Exp it's not going to happen. The Salary Cap is going down, the Celtics will be over the cap and no team is doing a sign and trade for Bosh, Wade or Lebron. Not going to happen. Sorry.

The only way it could possibly happen is by sign and trade. If it comes down to whether a team loses their star for nothing or loses him for something, they'll probably choose something.

If there's any slight chance you can pick up Wade, than gotdamn..kick Sugar Ray's sweet stroking ass to the curb with no hesitations...

Rondo, Wade, Pierce, KG, Perk, Sheed, Daniels, House...OMG!!!!!!!!!!That's a freak 8 man rotation..

(and than I wake up, and it was all just a dream.. :( )

why would no team do a sign and trade for one of those guys?? it's better than losing them for nothing.

in fact i wouldn't be surprised if one of those guys is traded midseason (well, mostly wade or bosh, if their teams go south).

Landing Bosh, Wade or a number of other big names could most definitely happen. Just like Danny landed KG. Just sayin, that seemed like a pipe dream too until it happened.

But I most definitely won't give it a second of thought until I read the headline.

Or at least until the first month of the season has been played

Getting someone like Wade in a S&T involving Ray is a possibility, but it's a pipe dream. Keep in mind Wade would have to pick to play here, it's not a normal trade. Yes, we have a winning atmosphere to offer him, but anywhere he's going to go can easily be a winner. I have a feeling he'd have more interest in staying with Miami, or going to New York or Chicago than to come to Boston. Someone like Joe Johnson's a possibility, but if he hasn't already signed an extension in Atlanta, I'd expect him to.

When it comes down to it, I expect to throw the same starting lineup out in 2010-2011 that we're throwing out there now.

Joe Johnson, Lebron(PO), dirk (PO), josh howard (TO), tracy broken mcgrady, yao ming(PO), dwane wade(PO), micheal redd(PO), amare stoudamire(PO), chris bosh(PO), carlos boozer. Those are the cream of the crop, now count on most of those player options(PO) to be taken up in this economy. That leaves us with Joe johnson, josh howard, tracy mcgrady, and boozer, well out of that bunch were not going to afford Johnson won't bite on boozer or mcgrady, and cuban will let howard walk or trade by mid season, that would be the best talent to seek out that's left in the price range I still think its a long shot for any of these players playing in celts uniform..

Our budget is 54 mil next year. Lets say pp reworks his contract even then I doubt it goes below 10 mil and we sign ray at a jason kidd type contract. 8, 8.5, 8.5 three years. Ok we saved 3 mil but added another roster spot. That gives us 9 spots on our roster at 51 mil. Add two draft picks that don't count against the cap, makes 11 players. One mle player that makes 12, one vet min or scrub contract makes 13 were at 59 mil(APX) Two roster spots open maybe we shoot for a Star but I say we miss blindly to chicago and new york, etc.

We could spend up to 9 mil like we did last year and get players like : luis scola, rasual butler, steven hunter, q rich, udonis haslem, luke ridnour, hakim warrick, rafer alston, al harrington, david lee, chris duhon, steve blake, travis outlaw, brandon roy, roger mason, matt bonner, kyle korver, mike miller..
These are just some of the player I'd consider there our more i'm sure..

And to add to this we still have to sign rondo and perk to big extensions ... and depends on how they plays eddie house and daniels could be resigned for cheap deals.

Plus i'm sure we have a trade coming so all this would then be mute by a player or two.

Give it a damn good effort for wade then Johnson then howard if none bite. On to 2nd tier players starting with warrick or outlaw or roy or butler.. we will land somebody who will it be..

This assumes that the home team actually believes the player will walk if they refuse to do a sign and trade. That's leaving quite a bit of money on the table. Also, whatever they get for the sign and trade has to be worth taking on the matching salary for at least a year. The team might be better off renouncing his rights and just picking up guys in free agency.

And who are we matching salaries with in this scenario? Pierce? Rondo on a sign and trade?

I don't know how it could work. I do know Danny Ainge knows how it could work and he's been aiming for this for a long time. Likely when free agency becomes the local media focus next year, details of how it's doable will emerge.

It probably won't actually happen, but it sounds as if they'll make a serious attempt.

Rondo and Perkins are the only real shot at landing someone like Wade, the Hawks tend to be a little easier to steal from but they are also very hard to deal with but I would imagine that Joe Johnson would be way, way up on Ainge's list.

The other thing is that if things get off to a bumpy start in Miami and it probably will, then Riley may decide that it isn't going to work even with all the cap space he can't acquire the pieces needed to compete with BOS, LAL, CLE, ORL right now so why not load up and focus on being on their heels. If that is the case why not move Wade mid season and get an expiring deal, the value, and also create another asset in a high lottery pick by sucking in the W/L column. I wouldn't put it passed Riley, especially with a young HC and a young roster. I just don't see Wade going back there the way that teams is constructed and I don't see turning it into 30 years olds making sense for Miami.

Just being realistic.

KG situation was completely different. Celtics had attractive young players (Jefferson, Gomes and Green), 1st round draft picks (gave Minny their 1st round pick back plus Boston's 1st rounder) and a huge expiring contract (Theo Ratliff). All assets that the Celtics don't have now.

The other teams don't have to do a sign and trade because they know that is the only way their player can leave to Boston.

The remarks by Wyc Grousbeck earlier this year about possibly getting a max player were made before they signed Rasheed Wallace. Wallace now counts over $6 million on the cap next season. The Celtics have no cap room to add a $10-$13 million player.

It's fun to dream it's just not very realistic.

I think you're misunderstanding the scenario. The star player doesn't have just one option. They can leave outright to a team under the cap. If they tell their current team, "I'm leaving no matter what. Make a deal so I can go to my first choice or I'm leaving anyway," than their current team has little choice.

Wade, Bosh, LeBron, and Joe Johnson are going to have tons of choices; and they're going to end up where they want to be.

What would you call Rajon Rondo, Kedrick Perkins and Ray Allen? Boston has all of its 1st round picks. It is the exact same scenario actually.
