The Celtics hired NBA former point guard Tyronn Lue as their Director of Basketball Development on Friday. He will assist the coaching staff and observe practices.
The 32-year-old Lue made his debut on Friday in Waltham as the Celtics prepare for their season opener on Tuesday in Cleveland. Lue played 11 seasons with seven different teams, including last year with Orlando. He won NBA titles in 2000 and ‘01 with the Lakers.
Is this a new Danny move.......

Very Aingian. Interesting because now we have another PG on the team who doesn't fill a roster spot. If the Celts need help at the 1 later in the year, Ainge won't have to compete with other GMs for a good player, he'll already have one traveling with the team and attending practices. This is about as close a GM can get to breaking the rules without actually breaking them. Ainge is always a step ahead of the pack so regardless of what I think of Lue as a player (he's OK) I love this "hiring".

Tres Aingian, indeed.
"Welcome aboard, Tyronne. Not that it matters, but what's your favorite number?"

This was inevitable.
Doc and Lue are very close friends from their Orlando days. There have been Lue to Boston rumors every year since Doc took over. Lue is also extremely close with Garnett and was instrumental in convincing KG that Boston would be a good destination.

NIce insurance move. Lue should be able to step right in if Rondo goes down for an extended period. Lue would help take the pressure off of Hudson in that situation. 16 deep

If this move doesn't prove Ainge as one of the shrewdest and craftiest GMs in the league, I don't know what does. He has proven time and time again that he will do whatever necessary to improve his team even if it means bending the rules a bit. I love his vision and foresight as well as his fortitude to go against the grain. We truly are lucky to have this guy steering the ship.

This is a big picture move in many ways. I like the idea of having Lue close by even if I would prefer to have Antonio Daniels strictly on ability. The Celtics liked Sweetney despite his weight issues but released him. I think most of us believe that Tony Allen has little to no on the court value at this point. Why not just release TA to clear a spot like so many other teams are doing? The big picture in the past was getting down to 13 or 14 players to make a couple of trading deadline maneuvers. This time may be a little different. Having the expiring contracts of TA, Scal, Bill Walker (team option), and yes even Eddie House should Hudson continue to improve, would put the Celtics in the ballgame if this year's deadline is different. This could end up being a wild trade deadline. You could see superstars changing teams because teams don't want to end up with nothing for their stars. You'll see teams who are out of it, looking desperately for ways to shed long-term salary with the inevitable big reduction in the salary cap looming. Everyone is wondering what is going to happen in the Summer of 2010. The early months of 2010 will play a role. The Celtics may just be good enough that they don't need to consider doing anything. But having no flexibility killed the Celtics last year with the Hail Mary experiment with Marbury. And while this team may look to do absolutely nothing to enhance 2009/10, the age of our stars will also be a factor as well as the situation with Rondo.

He signed as an assistant with Washington before the draft. Reunited with his old coach Flip Saunders.
