Pierce can opt out next summer - take $1 million

Lots of people on this site talk about the Big 3 making financial sacrifices.

Haven't seen any yet, but it would be nice.

Pierce and Ray both have the perfect opportunity to prove it.

They have each already made over $100 million.

If Pierce and Ray took $1 million each next season, the Celtics would have $36 million committed.
[that includes picking up the options on Giddens and Walker.] Only $34 million if they didn't.

They could sign a top free agent, and still have Pierce and Ray.

What they do at that point about Rondo or even KG matters less.

I think the cap hold for Rondo would still be $3.7 million, the qualifying offer. So as long as the free agent they signed was less than $12 million, and they gave up Walker and Giddens they could still also sign Rondo with "bird rights'.

Depending on the position of the free agent [or player acquired in "lopsided" cap trade] the Celtics could have upgraded at any position

If it was Center or PF:

Amare
Bosch
Lee

If we got one of these three, we could trade KG to get young players with upside to have a future.

or the wing:

Wade
Joe Johnson

[If we got Wade, we don't need to keep Ray for $1 million]

Guess we couldn't go for Lebron, since it would mean sitting Pierce and he made it all possible by giving up $20 million.

Anyway, there are lots of options:

All it takes is PIERCE TO OPT OUT, and many doors are opened.

Would be nice.

Don't expect it to happen.

But with all the talk about discounts by the Big 3, this would be a huge one by Pierce.

It could help make the transition to the next generation of Celtics seemless....

Rondo, Perk, "THE FREE AGENT", young players gotten for KG........

Or keep KG, though I think he is very expensive with a $50 million dollar cap, using almost 40% of it as his salary goes back up.

and build around Rondo, Perk and "THE FREE AGENT", in the future.

Pierce OPTS OUT and tons of options are available.

It would be fun.

But Pierce wants his money too much. .... so it won't happen...

How dare that greedy sob want anything remotely close to fair market value!

Seriously man? You think this stuff out and decide it's a good starting point for a reasonable conversation? That's one of the dumbest ideas I've seen proposed on this site, ever, and that's saying a lot. Have some damn sense.

I don't think Pierce will leave that much money on the table. But I do think he will opt out, then restructure is deal so that the C's can sign Ray, Rondo and some FA's. He can still make some good money and will get long term security and retire a Celtic.

Why?

Pierce will have made over $120 million after this season....

If he is all about winning championships... he should be happy to do it.....

We get to sign a prominent free agent, keep rondo, ......

it completely changes the celtics financial situation.....

Do i think it will happen....as I said iin the first post, no......

but it would be nice, wouldn't it?

If Pierce said, I made enough money and I want to win a couple of more championships... so go get a free agent......and resign Rondo....

The board is unreadable now. 4 Rondo-agenda-driven threads on top, while we have the season opener in 36 hours. Nuts.

I don't think he's a troll, but I am rolling my eyes.

Wolves, look at it this way: It's easy to say if you don't like it don't read it, but by the time I find out that a drawn out and unrealistic post was a complete waste of my time I've already read it. Pretty soon it becomes easier to just see the name of the poster and skip it.

It's not just unlikely to happen, it's a long premise based on a pipe dream. Paul will probably restructure for less, if you based your idea on a realistic amount this could have been an interesting thread. Saying he should "be happy" to do it is a joke and makes it look like you are taking a shot at him. Players don't do things like that, and I'm sure if they did the players union would be less than pleased with them, it's a tough precedent to place on other veterans.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the cap hold on Rondo be more than Wolves projection? I'm too lazy to look at the numbers but I get the feeling that even with PP signed for a dollar we still couldn't sign Amere or Bosh or Wade.

Wolves, I tried to tell you in your Rondo thread; if you make posts where you seemingly have some greater incite then the rest of us (as in, if we don't resign Rondo now we WILL lose him) you will not make many friends around here.

No one is asking Rondo to take less then market value. We just disagree on what that market value is..

I personally go further then that and question if "market value" on PG is really worth it. Who was the last max salary PG to win a championship? Yes I know some good PGs have won like Billups, Rondo and Parker but none of those were max guys, right?

My theory - get yourself an above average PG (not necessarily a superstar) at a below average salary and plow that money into bigs and swingmen..

Some evidence for this theory..
2002-2003 (Parker's Salary 800k)
2004 - 2005 (Parker's Salary 1.5 Million)
Chauncy Billups 2003-2004 (Billups 5 Million)
Rajon Rondo 2007-2008 (1.5 million)

So perhaps Danny should be looking for the next unheralded stud scoring point (Parker) or an undervalued vet who got kicked around a bit (Billups). I say once a PG gets "market value" like Marbury did it might be time to move on.

Why skimp on PGs? Your never going to get a "steal" on a big. Even a swingman is unlikely. But PG 'steals" happen fairly often.

The OP is ridiculous...

And Rondo`s cap hold is approximately $6.3 million...
http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#Q30

Rondo will never get a max contract. Even 10 mio per year is way too much...Maybe some other team will offer him that but I don`t want Danny to invest that kind of money into a PG who isn`t the best fit for our system...

WRONG! The cap hold for Rondo is 3 times for his last year salary.

End of story which is based on wrong information.

If Celtics signed a MAX player(LBJ?), Rondo is on his way to airport. That's reality.

Why would the Wolves want Rondo? The invest in not one, not two, but THREE, count 'em, Sessions, Rubio, and Flynn, three young point guards. The Wolves are neither trading for or signing Rondo as a free agent.

As for the OP.

Maybe trolling is the wrong word, but he is defiantly being an attention whore by being purposefully controversial. Maybe he's Felger. The analysis is about on par.

I think there is a limit to how much you can base things on what other teams have paid. You have to play the hand your are dealt. Obviously Danny will see what he can get in a trade, but if there is nothing good out there and your options are overpaying Rondo a bit or losing him outright I think you have to pay.

I would add to your point that a PG is not the focus of a championship team. If we play our cards right, we could always have a better scoring option than Rondo out there. Rondo would be a great pg to be the 4th to 2nd scoring option and be a team leader.

Yeah agree to disagree. I woudn't overpay a PG in a league which gave Marbury a max contract. I realize 'cap space' isn't everything. But owners don't want to go into lux tax territory. You can always find a use for that money on someone else.

If 'overpaying' for Rondo means doling out max salary to a guy who can't even command a single team I will pass. This is the situation Posey tried to get us in. Danny held the line and I think he will do it again.
