Trade 5

.
These 5 are all peripheral NBA talents. Scal only because he's highly injury prone, and therefore doesn't make a year-long impact. None of them are going to develop into much better players. The only real benefit: they're injury insurance, as they're already here and know our system. But, to be honest, even that doesn't warrant keeping them. Scalabrini is the best of the bunch, but he could go down at any time. Unfortunately, he's a concussion waiting to happen.

So, I'd trade them all, if possible. Trade down if necessary, for only 3 or 4 similar but better players – or with more potential. I'd definitely bring back Sweetney with a contingent that he lose no less than 100 lbs.

As far as mid-season (counting the play-offs) acquisitions here's what I think that we should be looking for.:
–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Priority #1
–––––––––
We may need a bona-fide 3rd option at the #1, ostensibly after Hudson, if he proves True. Which would basically be a 5th option, after House & Daniels. If not, then we need a bona-fide 2nd option, after Rondo, with House & Daniels doing spot duty.

Priority #2
–––––––––
Someone behind Pierce & Daniels at the 3.
(Priority #6 - preferably someone who can also do the 4.)

Priority #3
–––––––––
Behind Perk & Wallace (and Baby) at the 5.
(Hey, do you think Yao Ming could be an option?)

Priority #4
–––––––––
Behind K.G., Baby & Wallace at the 4.

Priority #5
–––––––––
Someone behind Ray Allen, House, & Daniels again, at the 2.

So the Questions are:
A: Who's out there that may be available by the Trade Deadline?
B: What make-up do think would work?

It's not going to work. Every team has a roster filled - so why do they want our deep bench when they have their deep bench already. Besides our guys do serve a purpose. When one of our rotation guy gets injured they need to step in and play.

um, ya, see, the trouble is nobody wants our crap.
you think teams are lining up to trade for those guys? all we'll get is crap in return, and frankly i'd rather have crap who knows our system and can at least play spot mints than some new guy coming in who just plain sucks (see moore, m).
also, i think walker and giddens have as much potential as anyone we could get back.
and williams has already proved useful.

I don't see the need to shake things up.

We have 4 big men who can play, and 2 more who can sort of play.

We have 2 SFs, 2 SGs, and 1 PG who can play, and a couple of the wing players can sort of fake it at PG. We have several other wings who might be able to play.

Except for being shallow at PG, this seems like a well-balanced roster.

Pretty good analysis but I have to take issue with one point...

Scalabrini is the best of the bunch

Nobody in that group is particularly valuable but c'mon...we can't market Scalabrine's intangibles any more than Giddens', Walker's, and Williams' potential.

I also hope a mid-season trade goes down but, in light of this past week, I have a feeling Big Baby will be on the block.

Nobody wants allen and giddens and I don't want to trade sheldon or walker.
But somebody will bite on davis, allen and giddens so those three, and perhaps scal but I doubt it. We won't trade him he's to willing to do anything we want, play anywhere we want, and is the only white guy remember...lol

Maybe mid season we do rasual butler ,brian skinner kareem rush
for glenn davis, tony allen, jr giddens,
L.A. would do it because they shed salary and get a big (albeit a baby) for the reserve who can play, plus they don't no what there doing over there. We shed 3 mill with the baby and we don't have to pick up an option on goofy. With three open roster spots and a chance of signing rasual (which I'd do.) we'd be tight for next year.

It isn't a bad idea at all to do a deal like this. It would give us two shooters, and I love having those (around Rondo). If something like this were to happen, I wouldn't be down on it.

The thing is that I think we could do much better. For all of the talk about how no one wants our crap, I think that we are sitting pretty good right now with expiring deals that could pry a quality player away who would want to be part of this club. Here is what I really think we need:

1. A guy who canm play the 3 spot: We just don't have that guy on th bench right now. Yeah, Marquis is a decent three, but he is really a 2. That he can D up LeBron is nice, but Quis is at his best beating up on guys smaller than him. After watching Doc overplay Ray (who is used as the 3 with the second unit) over the last two games, I'd REALLY like to have somebody good to throw out there to stop Doc from doing this.

2. I would like to get someone who we could potentially start without issues if Paul or Ray needs to sit out a game or two, if not longer. I don't want these guys pushing themselves through difficult injuries, instead of getting good rest.

3. I would really like this guy to be a biggish 3, who could play the 4 in a smaller lineup, a la Posey. Sometimes you simply have to match up, so getting someone who is 6'8" or 6'9" would really help.

4. I want this guy to be a good three point shooter. One of the reasons that Doc overplays Ray is because of his shooting (which is why Butler and Rush would be nice fits here).

5. Ideally this guy would be a stud defender and a team oriented type of guy.

Well, I've been thinking about it, and the guy who would fit the bill perfctly here, and who we have the contracts to get, would be none other than Shane Battier.

Don't laugh. We have the expiring deals to do this, and he is not overpayed. Would you rather pay Tony and Scal to ride the pine, or Shane to do his thing? As for the reality of prying him away from the Rockets, I think that everyone and their brother knows that the best thing they could do is lose, lose, lose and cash in on the lottery next year. Shane is 31 years old, and his contract ius up after next season. He has also been a good soldier for the Rockets, but he actually has no real use for them now. He will be too old to help them down the road, and he would help to prevent them from losing right now. It isn't as if the teams that could really use him have anything more to offer than we do... think about it. We, at least, could present them with a very nice, Eastern Conference destination to reward Shane for being a good guy. They get to clear money, they get to lose, and maybe we give them a pick.

The bottom line is that if you add this guy to our team, barring injuries, we win a Title. It is that simple. We would be the greatest defensive team in the history of the game. Imagine being able to throw out a lineup of Rondo, Paul, Battier, Garnett and Perkins (with Quis and Sheed in the shute). We would still be able to score, and would shut down teams utterly. Hell, if Ray wanted too much money on an extension, we could let him walk and just start Battier. Sure, we lose some offense, but the defense would be insane. I'm not saying that we should let Ray walk, just that Shane is a VERY nice insurance policy.

The guy is a player. He is 6'8" and can defend Kobe, Vince and LeBron. If Paul or Ray had to get some rest, we could easily start him for some games, and be OK against everyone except the very best teams. He could be the 4 in a small line up. He hits the three and is one of the smartest players in the game. Hell, he was a big part of why the Rockets were able to really push the Lakers last season in the playoffs, despite having half of their payroll sitting in street clothes.

We get him, we win. Guaranteed.

Other candidates would be Rudy Gay, Martell Webster, and Anthony Morrow.
