I would like that he signs now, but on the other hand the market is not so big next summer, despite a lot of teams with cap space.

Potential suitors:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/dailydime ... -091030-31

1. NEW JERSEY - Allstar pg HARRIS
$53.6 million salary cap: $24.9 million in cap space
$50 million salary cap: $21.3 million in cap space

2. NEW YORK
$53.6 million salary cap: $23.4 million in cap space
$50 million salary cap: $19.8 million in cap space

3. MIAMI - bad combination with Wade
$53.6 million salary cap: $18.5 million of cap space
$50 million salary cap: $14.9 million of cap space

4. CHICAGO -Soon to be Allstar pg Rose
$53.6 million salary cap: $12.9 million of cap space
$50 million salary cap: $9.3 million of cap space

5. MINNESOTA - Flynn, Sessions, Rubio rights
$53.6 million salary cap: $12.5 million of cap space
$50 million salary cap: $8.9 million of cap space

6. OKLAHOMA CITY - Westbrook
$53.6 million salary cap: $11.8 million of cap space
$50 million salary cap: $8.2 million of cap space

7. L.A. CLIPPERS - Baron Davis
$53.6 million salary cap: $11.1 million of cap space
$50 million salary cap: $7.5 million of cap space

Yes, we are lucky...6 of 7 teams with cap space have a great pg already signed.

On paper only NY is capable of giving him a contact offer, but that if all of Lebron, Bosh, Wade say no. Miami is a possibiltie is Wade is not resigned, than for Mia probably Rondo would be nb.1 target. So looking realistic (NY-Lebron, Mia-Wade stays) he will have a hard time getting a 10mio plus contract.

So I think Ainge has a better cards in his hands.

I could see the Clippers offering Rondo a contract, he'd be a good fit with Eric Gordon. The Knicks could also offer him a deal if the miss out on James/Wade.

But I doubt Rondo wants to go to a bottom feeding team. He loves to win and the Celtics offer him teh best chance to do so

Didn't Sacramento have a decent amount of capspace for next summer? They're the only team I see being a serious threat in re-signing Rajon Rondo. He'd fit in very well there and they've expressed some interest IIRC.

Sacramento?

Yes, they should be somewhere there around max 10 mio but looking at their financial situation, Tyreke Evans at pg+Udrih signed for another 4 years (6-7mio)..I dont think they would be interested.

I dunno...Miami and NY sound very dangerous and will have money burning a hole in their pockets.

There are plenty of other teams just a trade away.

With that said, Rondo will probably be signing a $50-55m deal within the next 24 hours or so.

JMO.

The link you provide says there will be 7 contract slots and that assumes those teams and others PICK UP ALL OF THEIR PLAYER OPTIONS. Does that sound realistic? Won't at least some players not have their options picked up so teams can pursue free agents, after all we've seen in the last few years?

For the last 3 years teams have been shedding payroll and "giving away players.

Look at this link: http://www.storytellerscontracts.info/r ... laries.htm

See if the ESPN story makes any sense. It shows player salaries, cap space, options etc for all teams.

To pick just one team, Minnesota...ESPN says they have $8.9 m of cap space if the cap is $50 million. But that assumes the wolves pick up Pecherov ($2.4 m) [not likely], it also assumes both Sessions and Gomes are kept. Gomes has a partially guaranteed deal. Only $1 million of $4.2 million next season is guaranteed. If Flynn shows he can play as a starting PG, Sessions good contract has great trade value. So Sessions $4 m deal could also be removed from the wolves cap space. If Flynn is playing well, Rubios rights could also be traded in all of the wheeling and dealing next summer. That opens another $2.8 million. If just the Gomes and Pecherov moves happen that opens up $5.2 million more of cap space. That gives $14.1 million of cap space. If we add the Sessions and Rubio moves, that opens up an additional $6.8 million for a Grand Total of $14.1 and $6.8 or $20.9 Grand Total possibly available vs. $8.9 forecast by ESPN. If the cap is $53.6 the $20.9 million is increased by $3.6 million or $24.5 m. The wolves have a lottery pick next year which might use say $3 million. But that still leaves plenty of money to get a Max player if they so choose.

Many teams have these types of options available to them. Again ESPN is assuming every team exercises ALL PLAYER OPTIONS. Does that seem realistic after what we have seen. Its just STUPID!!

Doing this type of analysis most analysts say there will be 7 max contract slots available if lebron, wade, bosch etc all stay with their teams. If they leave, that opens more Max contract slots at Miami and Cleveland.

If lebron, wade and bosch stay with their current teams, that moves Rondo up the list of desirable free agents, with lots of money available.

He could be #1 after those 3. If you don't believe me look at the web site showing cap space for next year and look at team options.

http://www.storytellerscontracts.info/r ... laries.htm

There are lots of opportunities.

I count ten teams that are gonna be under the cap next year, Atlanta, Chicago, Houston L.A. Clippers, Miami, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma City, Sacramento.
And Cleveland and Memphis could be players as well.. So lots of options for several max or near to max players to sign with.
Will be an interesting off season. Hope Rondo deal gets done by Monday.

Lets look at the Nets as another example. ESPN says the Nets have $24.9 million in cap space if the cap is $53.6million and $21.3 million if the cap is $50 million.

But what is the detail.

Nets have contracted

Devin Harris 8.9
Terrence Williams 2.2
Najera 3.0 [might not be guaranteed also, but couldn't find detail]

Team options on
Yi 4.1
Lopez 2.4 - nets take this one
Sean Williams 2.5
Courtney Lee 1.4 - nets take this one
Douglas-Roberts 0.9 - nets take this one

Qualifying offers
Boone 3.0

Non-guaranteed contracts

Dooling - $3.8` million but only 0.5 guaranteed

The only guys the Nets keep are: Harris, Williams, Najara, Lopez, Lee, and CDR.

That adds up to 19.3 in money tied up - so $30.7 million of cap space if the salary cap is $50 m and $34.3 of cap space if the salary cap is $53.6 m

Thats alot more cap space than ESPN forecasts. Nets could have $10 million more than what ESPN said..... without any additional trades etc...

ESPN's numbers are bogus... will the Nets keep guys like Yi if they can get Lebron and Amare or Boozer?

Agreed that ESPN's numbers are a bit off, but you are also forgetting that some of those options for 1st round picks get exercised before the off-season of 2010*. There is also the issue of fielding a minimum roster of 12 players. If you have only 4 players under contract (and renounce everyone else), then 8 minimum salaried players will count against you (another $4 million or so). Hoopshype also still shows Dooling's contract for NJ:
http://hoopshype.com/salaries/new_jersey.htm

*I think that might be the case for Yi (2007 draft pick), but check it out.

No one is going to sign Rondo while the BIG names are still out there. I think it could end up being a sad summer for Rondo. Waiting for the Bosh, Wade and LBJs to sign and hoping someone has money left. Also a team that signs him takes themselves out of the market as they wait to see if we match. I just get the feeling he is not going to get what he wants.

He probably gets what he wants by tomorrow night.... more than $10 million.... which is what he told Maxwell he wanted.

Celtics sources said after todays meetings they were optimistic about a deal, according to CSN, the Celtics broadcaster.

Lets try the Miami

Money locked in"

Beasley 5 M
Cook 2.2 M

Team option:

Chalmers 0.9 -- Heat keep.

Not Guaranteed

Jones $4.7 M, but O as in Zero is guaranteed. -- don't keep.

Player options

Wade 17.1
Anthony 0.9

If wade and Anthony take player options: Heat use $26.1 m of cap so they have 23.9 if the cap is $50 m and 27.5 M if the cap is $53.6 M - thats if Wade stays.

If wade leaves add $17.1 M to those totals, so $41 M if cap is 50 M and 44.6 M if cap is 53.6

Thats compared to ESPN saying they had 14.9 and and 18.6

take away maybe 3 or 4 million to have 12 bodies as someone said......the Heat still have as much as 23.5 million if they keep Wade and over $40 million if they don't keep Wade.

ESPN number are bogus.

sacramento isn't even mentioned:

players signed:

martin 10.6
Nocioni 6.9
Udrih 6.5
garcia 5.5
evans 3.9
Hawes 3.0
thompson 2.2
casspi 1.3
greene 0.9

qualifying offer

Rodriguez 2.3 - dont' take.

Total without Rodriguez 40.8 so maybe $11 million available with 12 man roster.

and I would guess that either Martin or Evan is traded at the trading deadline. they have two good shooting guards..... Evans isn't a PG.

The Bulls

who has contracts:

deng 11.4
hinrich 9.0
rose 5.5
noah 3.1
johnson 1.7
gibson 1.1

team option

Tyrus thomas 6.3

player option:

salmons 5.8

If the Bulls want to try to get wade, they renounce Tyrus Thomas [but Salmons stays with the bulls] they use 37.6 million. If Salmons chooses not to exercise his player option then the bulls use 31.8 m

so if the bulls renounce Thomas and Salmons goes into free agency....

with 50 m cap that leaves 18.2, if the cap is 53.6 that leaves 21.8 in cap space available.

vs...espn estimate of 9.3 m or 12.9 m
