Trade Idea

The celtics pretty much have killed any cap flexability that we hoped they might have by extending Rondo early this year, although you can definitely argue it had to be done from our perspective

however going forward the celtics are going to find it extremely difficult to find a young wing that could possibly be there premier perimeter scorer once the big three are gone

i am a firm believer in that you cant find a premeir wing player outside the lottery anymore in the NBA, and beyonf that Danny has a terrible track record drafting wing players to begin with

so the celtics need to try and capatilize on the incompatence of the memphis front office, Rudy Gay would be a guy that could flourish off the bench and as a role player for our team while learning to play nba basketball the right way from the likes of the big three; also gay would give us a guy going forward that has the potential to be a top 20 scorer in the NBA and is a guy that could benefit from molding his game after pierce's

that being said, the only way we get a young player as talented as gay is by quickly trying to take advantage of the bad situation chris wallace has created in memphis, one in which Gay will be a restricted free agent after this year, and is not getting along with their franchise player mayo

its a longshot but danny should definitely call and offer a package of our first rounder big baby, and whatever else we can find to throw in there giddens tony walker scal lester to try and make it work

besides no nba gm is doing his job if he isnt calling chris wallace daily to try and make a lopsided trade

It was rumored over the summer that Ainge offered Rondo for Gay and Conley so that has to be the starting point. In light of Rondo's extension, it's not happening and the Celts don't have anyone else to offer. Chris Wallace might be an awful GM but give him some credit, he's not that bad and he's not playing NBA Live.

Forget the Pau Gasol trade already?

i was kinda hoping that corey brewer would get off to a slow start this season and we could trade during or sign him at the end of the season... but hes played well and got his option picked up unsurprisingly

Gay would be a great addition, but I think the only way we'd get him would be to find Memphis desperate to cut costs and interested in unloading Gay, Randolph and Jaric for a bunch of our expirings - Ray, TA, Scal, Walker and Baby for Gay/Randolph/Jaric works in the checker - hugely disruptive to the team dynamic, and Memphis can probably get better deals for Gay.

the biggest selling point on why we could get gay at a discount price is that he will be a free agent after this year, and is causing some problems on this team

big baby is a solid young player he can point out averaged around 20 and 10 in the playoffs, and for some reasons nba gms think 1st rounders make all trades look excellent

the only downside is that they have no other enticing players to offer a team, but look at this trade scal/ tony/ big baby and a first rounder for rudy gay and marko jaric

that trade looks a little more reasonable as the griz are getting out of marco's contract and getting the expirings of tony and scal, which gives them 7 mil off the books next year and around 14mil in total with adding big baby's (who they could let go in FA) and losing gay's, those moves would clear them up to let them give someone a max deal in the summer of 2010, if you sell that angle to your fans they might be pretty happy with the trade

no way we trade ray this year, i think just clearing marco's contract off there hands might be enough, in chris wallace's head he undoubtedly thinks that a team with conley mayo x max free agent randolph and thabeet would be able to compete for a top spot in the west

they certainly would have a chance to be talented but that would all depend on which free agent they got

He got Marc Gasol and cap flexibility (though I admit I'm trying to ignore with what he did with that cap flexibility.)

I know it's still early but Marc Gasol is a pretty good player that may be worthy of giving up his older brother.

I think within the next few seasons we wil get a trade something like this. If your willing to spend and are patient you can eventually find a good deal.

I'd be interested to know Dannys thoughts on deals where we trade Ray and get him back. We could throw 3 million is cash and tell Ray if he takes a generous buyout to help make the other team pull the trigger on the deal that we will give him that money back in his next deal. If we could trade Ray for a good young prospect and someone on a crappy contract we would get a future starter and at some point wed have a nice expiring contract to trade.

I don't want Gay on this team.
We can't resign Allen for bigmoney if he's cut from Memphis and comes back, we don'zt have the bird rights.
What about Al Harrington for MLE next summer?

I think you couldn't more far off in your evaluation. West and Allen were terrific picks at #24 and #25 in draft. If Allen had stayed healthy, he might not be a premier wing but he would be a solid NBA player like West.

As far as premier wings outside lottery, Danny Granger and Kevin Martin immediately come to mind as do Gilbert Arenas and Manu Ginobilli.

It used to be you couldn't get a young stud big man outside lottery but then San Antoinio nabbed the second best player in the draft - so far - in Dejuan Blair.

Marc Gasol is pretty good, and it's true that his development mitigates the atrocity of the trade somewhat.

But the thing is: he wasn't remotely worthy of giving up Pau AT THE TIME. Just because the throw-in turns out to be pretty good doesn't mean that they got anywhere near appropriate value at the time and that the trade wasn't criminally lopsided...The guy was 6 months removed from being a mid 2nd round pick; he was a throw-in.

Not at all but those trades aren't really comparable. Gasol was making about $16M when the Grizz traded him unlike Gay who makes about $3M. The Gasol trade was mainly a salary dump. If Wallace traded Gay for Big Baby then...wow. I proposed a Baby-for-Morrow swap last week and that got shot down so I don't see how this is trade is any more realistic. Besides, the Gasol trade had more to do with Jerry West than Chris Wallace in my opinion.

I have a super trade idea.... let's not make any. The team is deep, talented, and has great chemistry thus far. I know DA is always looking because he is a good GM and that is his job... but I really don't see anything happening anytime soon.

I think the trade that works best for botht eams is TA / Scal / Baby for Gay / Jaric.

Jaric is a horrible contract. He can't get time in Memphis so I doubt he would ever see the floor here. Wallace would be thrilled to get rid of him. Throw in a decent role playing 4 for a guy who will be a RFA next year and it's not a terrible deal. Especially since it gives the team a little more direction and they can go after a FA right away without Gay counting against the cap.

From the Celtics standpoint the trade is a win / lose. If Shelden is still playing well the loss of Baby isn't that big as Williams game (banger) meshes better with Sheed's anyways. Add Rudy to an already strong bench and we probably win the championship easily. But the trade would require a huge commitment from the owners. If we resigned Ray and Gay for roughly 20 mil per year combined we would have no more money left to do anything else. Probably draft picks and vet min contracts fill out the roster. Essentially the bench would be weak the next year and could cost a championship in the Big 3's window.

However after a year jaric will be gone. By that point Gay probably replaces Ray as a starter and the Celt's will have a nice young core with Rondo / Gay / Perk to move foward after the Big 3. Danny can use the MLE to round out a bench of ? / Ray / ? / ? / Wallace and the Celt's will once again be title contendors.
