Gomes?

I have been hearing some talk that Minny mighr be looking to part ways with Gomes. If they can get out from under his contract they can offer someone a Max deal this summer. I posed the question on the Minny board and the general consensus seemed to be that it wouldn't take a lot to get him, some combination of our scraps and maybe a 1st. I'd love to get him back in green one way or another, via trade or free agency.

In terms of talent and personality Gomes would obviously fit well with this current Celtics team. He's also New England guy so most fans would be happy to see him back in green. But, where is he going to find minutes? Doc seems pretty set on using the three man wing rotation of Allen, Pierce and Daniels. So maybe there is spot minutes available at the three, maybe 5-8 per game. And at PF we obviously have Garnett with Williams playing well and Davis slated to come back in a few weeks. So there really just isn't that much room available for Gomes. If one of the three current wing players were to go down with an injury then Gomes would make a lot more sense as a guy who fills a need.

I'd take Gomes over Baby any day...or both on the bench helping us out, either way!

I'm beginning to think I'd take Shelden over BBD as well, and I don't mean that as a disrespect to Baby.

well t.allen and jr giddens works, do it get it done.
4 years left on a contract i'd say i like the #'s of years and cost but this year it's a log jam, unless eddie or daniels gets dropped next year its a log jam.
but i still do it..

What does he bring that we don't already have?

Size at the 3 spot, thats what he provides that we do not have, someone large outside of pierce to muscle up the leborns/kobes of the world on the wings, I would do TA/Giddons + a 2nd rounder for gomes in a heartbeat, if any of our wings go down we are very short on depth

To be honest I have wondered if the reason that "big 3 spot" has never been filled has been with an eye towards Gomes. He has actually made himself a very good SF, decent defensively and able to knock down the 3. His contract is strange in that it gets expensive 4.2 mil, 4.6 mil, 4.9 mil PO but can be bought out this off season for 1mil, 1mil, $750,000.
That said he is MINN second best player behind Al who he is out rebounding at this point. I don't see why they look to just give him away. Obviously MINN isn't going anywhere with Ryan Gomes as their second best player but he still has value as starting caliber player in the league.
I love Ryan so yeah I would I deal for him in a second, more with an eye towards next season and moving forward than even this year. It extends the rotation but that is fine. You can shave some mins off of Ray, Paul, and Daniels and find 17-18 mpg for him backing up the 3 and 4. It may limit what is there for Baby or Sheldon but that is their problem.
Gomes would give Boston a legit starter on the wing who can knock down the 3. He isn't Ray Allen by any means but Ray isn't going to grab 6 or 7 boards a game. You could slide Pierce to the 2 and start Gomes at the 3 in a world without Ray and if Ray comes back you are in a position to be stronger with him in a reduced role.
They already had Sheldon so I don't think he is going to be attractive to them but they may want him just to play the mins this season and Davis has guaranteed money for next year. You could build a deal around TA or Scal's contract and Walker (who they can keep without a any implications on their cap space) and Giddens. They wouldn't want next years first because of the guaranteed money so it would have to be a future first but it all seems to be make sense for Boston if that is all MINN wants for him.

I got to watch some T-Wolves games to see where he's at. I would think Kobe or Bron would skip past him fairly easily.

Yes it works, and I'd do it in a heartbeat, but why would Minny? TA and JR suck so bad...

He held Pierce to 10 points on 3-12 and has an opponents PER of 6 playing the SF spot this season and it is half of his mins this season. He is also getting killed at the PF spot defensively for what that is worth the Wolves are one of the worst defensive teams in the league.

Scal/Walker for Gomes would upgrade our bench further, but his contract is a lot to pay for a back-up whose minutes will be limited..

I don't think he is that bad defensively but that's like an off night for Paul. His PER against is 15.3 which is pretty respectable in that Minnesota system, IMHO. I think he would defend much better with Sheed and KG out there.
Scalarbine - I flat out dont like vey much as a player. Seems like a good guy though. And Walker well I have the feeling he isn't going to make it really. So Scalabrine and Walker for Gomes works for me. As for a future 1st round pick - that's abit harder to swallow. Gomes would barely play for us with PP at the 3 and MD out there.

Forget about the pick it is more about the money. If you don't think this guy is going to play 17-18 mpg for you and more in the future then you don't do it.
Right now Shelden Williams is playing 16 mpg and Daniels 21. While you can't give all of Williams mins to Gomes he could play a big chunk of that 16 figure 10 and take 3 from Daniels and two each from Pierce and Allen and you have 17 mpg.
That is the biggest addition I think Gomes would bring to this team is the ability for Doc to no longer feel the need to keep Ray or Pierce on the floor with the second unit. He would have a legit wing threat.
But big picture it allows Boston the luxury of re-signing Ray Allen and reducing his role and while being able to create that match up with Pierce being able to go to work on a smaller defender. I think Gomes could be the key to this team growing old gracefully.

I've liked Gomes game since he was at PC, and I still do now as he's diversified that game quite a bit since his college days. If we can move little more than junk for him, then it's worth doing. It's always worth moving scraps for a legit NBA player.
But being realistic, there isn't much of a spot for him as this team is currently constructed. He's not going to start, and there's no one in the rotation who's screwing anything up to the point where they should be losing minutes. On top of that, we're already waiting on Baby to return and will have to find a way to divvy up the minutes between him and the rest of the bigs. There is no point bringing Gomes in just to be a short minutes bench player, and if you want him playing more than that, where are those minutes going to come from?
You could say that we'd finally have a more prototypical SF back-up for Paul, but Doc has rarely gone long in any game with either Ray or Paul on the bench. He always wants one of those guys out there, and in terms of player caliber, I don't blame him. Many of us would like to think that if Doc had the option of resting Paul or Ray, he would, but I don't think he really wants to. Doc doesn't want Paul or Ray playing 28-30 minutes/gm, they're both still too good to be limited to such short minutes in favor of an inferior bench player getting those minutes instead.
Of course, Gomes would be great insurance in case of an injury. But if Minny is looking to make moves, he'll most likely still be on the table if something like that happens. And if not him, somebody else will be.
Right now, I just don't see much of a need for him, but would gladly take him anyway if the cost is cheap.

No, of course I agree with you, it's just that if Danny could swindle someone into taking our trash, well, he deserves to be GM of the year

Of the entire "youth movement" crew Gomes would be the guy I would want back. West is a nuts. Jefferson sure he score and board. But he doesn't play much d, and he doesn't seem to play too smart with regards to passing.. and now he has a big salary. TA well we still have him but he is injury prone and doesn't play that smart either.
What's cool about Ainge though is how he is willing to cut guys who are 'our' guys but not really that great. You have to like the MD and Shelden Williams pickups this year. While neither guy is going to be as well loved by the fans as our draftees - they seem to play just as well if not better..
Its shades of BB.

I wouldn't be opposed to moving Baby for him. Assuming we're satisfied with Shelden (I am), then we have an absolute log jam at our bigs (not like Minny doesn't either, maybe get a third team?) and we'd probably benefit more from having someone who can play the 3 and the 4 rather than the 4 and the 5 like Baby.
