Doc's contract runs through 2010-2011 -

Doc's contract runs through the end of next season. Thats when Pierce's contract expires and the Big 3's run will surely be over.

I don't think Doc will want to stay for another rebuild, and from what I've seen I wouldn't want him to coach a Rondo led team.

This team is going through a transition. Rondo's role needs to expand. Doc's doesn't know how to do that without disrupting team chemistry. If he doesn't figure it out, we will lose because teams offense is predicated on finding open jumpers for "older players" : Ray, KG, Pierce, House and Wallace. Jumpers don't fall as easily when you are older. The Celtics need more of an inside game. They can get some of it from Perkins. But much of it will have to be generated by Rondo.

What Doc should do, is use Rondo to selectively attack opponents when the match ups favor the Celtics. But, Doc won't design game plans that way. Rondo has his contract. He doesn't need to score. He won't aggressively attack the hoop unless its part of Doc's game plan. Rondo doesn't want more bad blood with the big 3. He will keep giving them all the jump shots they can take.

But eventually both the Big 3 and Doc will figure out that they have to "game plan" Rondo attacking the hoop for this team to win another championship.

Will Doc want to stay beyond next season? I don't think so. But if wants to be in the discussion about coaching the Celtics in 2 years, he needs to make better use of Rondo. Attack the obvious mismatches like tonight against the Hawks. And find ways to use Rondo's young legs to energize this older team.

Thats my hope.

I don't see the connection between Doc's contract running out and Rondo being underutilized in the offense. And I don't understand this statement...

This team is going through a transition.

I think the term "transition" is designated for lottery teams. "Contending transition" is...made-up and...

You're implying that Rondo is more important to the team. If so, that's not true mainly because he's still not assertive enough. Last night against ATL he didn't take a shot until the 4th quarter. I guarantee Doc wasn't telling him not to shoot...And when he needs to exhibit offensive confidence, he often buckles. He missed 2 huge free throws with 2:30 left and he shoots something like 60% @ the line over his career. I'm a huge fan of Rondo but these are things he gotta deal with himself, Doc can't physically make him score. Rondo might never have to be an offensive force but he's gotta display more confidence so opposing defenses will play him honest. Otherwise, they'll be sagging off for the rest of his career and that certainly won't open up the lane for him to drive to the hoop as your visionary playbook would indicate.

As for Doc, one of the anchors on Comcast Sports said he's considering a sabbatical to "re-fresh" and return to the team in 2011. I think it's a good idea but it would probably send a poor message to the fans. Hopefully he re-signs with the C's.

The connection is simple. The next phase of Rondo's transition from afterthought on offense to part of the "Big 4" is Doc selectively using Rondo to attack certain opponents. Rondo should be going to the rim, when opponents have: 1) older PG like Nash, Kidd, Bibby, Billups ets., 2) when the opposing PG can't spell defense like Calderon, Harris etc. or 3) when it would help the Celtics to make the opposing PG play some defense like against Chris Paul, Deron Williams etc [Tire them out on defense to hurt their offense].

The Big 3 are getting old. The team needs younger legs to have a chance to win another championship. The obvious solution is to use Rondo and Perk more, especially Rondo since he can create for others.

Doc is either too stupid, too stubborn or too afraid of the Big 3 reaction to make Rondo attacking the rim, part of the game plan. Doc just continues to use his "jump shooting offense", when old leges have difficulty jump shooting at times.

If Doc can't figure out how to use Rondo, I definitely wouldn't want him to be extended, since Rondo is the future of this team.

Thats the connection.

Doc has been Rondo's only coach since entering the league 4 years ago so I'll assume that he understands Rondo's game as well as anybody. Doc knows Rondo's limitations and isn't going to jeopardize winning games now to highlight RR on offense. This is the C's last best chance at a title. Next year, I think Rondo should be more involved in the offense but not so much this year. In regards to Doc coaching the team - if he wants to come back, he will.

It's Wolves2011, Scal sneezing on the bench has a connection with Rondo not getting enough credit or not having a big enough role.

I have a good idea Wolves, maybe you should start another 10 or 15 Rondo related threads this week. Rondo's one of my favorite players, if I keep having to see more of this crap even I'm going to stop liking him.

If Doc won't design any plays for Rondo to go to the hoop, then Rondo shouldn't be criticized for not running those non-existent plays.

In 2 years when this is Rondo's team, we need a coach who can make use of his abilities.

Agreed. Rondo is on of my favorite players, but all this obsession by Wolves is making me start to annoyed with Rondo.

Same here. Before Wolves started posting, I wouldn't have minded shelling out $13M per year to Rondo in the offseason. No I think he's going to be grossly overpaid at $11M per and that he should barely be making $8M per.

This is so far off and there are so many variables concerning the older players that any speculation now is a waste of time.

In the Celtics 8 wins, Rondo was the best Celtic in 5 of them.
