Kendrick Perkins

Post#1 » by loscy » Wed Dec 2, 2009 2:50 am

He is signed through next season. We are able to sign him to an extension after this season. What do you think he is worth and for how long? Personally i think we cant afford to lose him as there is no way to replace the interior defense he provides. His offense has improved significantly as well and there is no question at this point that he is a starting caliber center in the NBA. Currently he makes 4.75 million this year and 4.89 million next year undoubtedly a bargain. I think 8-9 million a year is optimal but 10+ wouldn't surprise me. Thoughts?

Perk is a vital cog on this team. And you're right, it is increasingly more difficult to find true physical interior defenders who are not abismal offensively. It's a tough call where to put a ceiling on his salary. I mean, you look at a guy like Brendan Haywood. Is Perk significantly better than Haywood? You also have to factor in the injury history too.

I don't want to lose Perk. But I'm inclined to say I would put the lid at around $8mm.

$8 million sounds about right to me. But I can imagine he'll get 5ys/50 million offer.

5 years ago today's perk probably could have gotten Dampier money, but with today's economy who knows. He'd have to make a real big stink along with his agent to make it happen.

Well, the fact that Rondo's agent played "chicken" with Ainge and Danny caved certainly gives Perk incentive to play hardball.

Pretty much where my thoughts came from. Perk is a lot different from rondo, so it will be interesting to see how it goes down.

I think Perk would sign for $7 million on a long contract. He wants to stay in Boston. Based on his numbers he could probably get as much as $10 but I think he'll pass on the free agent market to get a deal done sooner.

I agree with this. This is Perk's home and he loves it here. With his amazing D, he could easily get more but I don't figure Perk for that kind of person.

I think it's imperative for Ainge to extend Perkins, you already have done so for Rondo. Especially, if the idea is to maintain continuity. Rondo's twenty-three and Perkins is twenty-five, so they represent your young core. From this, you would've the two hardest positions to fill in your starting lineup addressed.

Yeah after the Rondo precedent Perk can get 10 million plus and the way he is playing of late he would indeed deserve that.

OTOH I'd don't agree with this "filler" thinking nor does "continuity" interest me. We won a championship by putting superior players on the floor at every spot BUT the PG and C and we had next to zero continuity outside of Pierce.

You sign guys because you think they are worth that salary or even more...that's the key factor.
