Could we make a deal with the Jazz?

We still need a backup small forward and backup point guard who does more then shoots. They seem like they want to get some expirings which we have an abundance of.

if they want to give us millsap for BBD plus expirings, i'm all ears.
i suspect that they're not trading millsap tho, unless someone bowls them over.
anyone else, i'm not too interested in.
maybe booz if it's a firesale.

This is exactly the sort of opportunity we should look for-
Ray for Kirilenko, Knicks' unprotected 1st
IF Ray gets bought out and returns after 30 days, this is the sort of talent upgrade we need - albeit an expensive one.
AK-47 has 1 contract year after this for 18 million - if we resign Ray at MLE money, our payroll next season would be 85 million, about what it is now - plus the lotto pick. There's also the possibility that Pierce could opt out and restructure to give the team more wiggle room..
Other potential modifications:
Baby going to Utah for an expiring
CJ Miles coming to Boston for Scalabrine
Utah's 1st going to Boston
FYI the Jazz currently have picks 8 (NYK) and 14 (UTH) in this summer's draft. The Knicks' pick could rise or fall, as could Utah's - but it's moderate risk and high reward.. in addition, Kirilenko playing for a contract isn't just a throw-in - he could spell Pierce and KG and a change of scenery/system could benefit him.

I'm not too keen on trading away Ray during the season. Even if he were to get bought out, we wouldn't be able to re-sign him for 30 days. A lot can happen in 30 days, and losing those games might cost the team homecourt in the 2nd round.
Trading for AK would also mean an $18 million 6th man. I don't think Wyc and Co. would be too pleased about that. Unless of course, Danny had a Rondo + AK for Chris Paul deal lined up already.

We paid millions to Theo Ratliff when he could barely play - Kirilenko is a trade chip - and if we don't do a trade like this, the most we can do next summer is add another MLE player.

i actually like the thinking.. not sure if the jazz would buy out ray though
getting the knicks pick, a true back up for Paul, and more depth behind kg would be awesome.. but also, it aint my money im talking about
not sure if they are that despirate to dump ak that they would give away the knicks pick also..
still, as i said i like the thought

Did you forget that we dumped Raef in that deal, a guy whose contract ran 1 year longer than Ratliff's?

so you trade a key productive player for a "trade chip"?
no thanks.
and getting an MLE player isn't the worst thing when you've got one of the best starting 5's in basketball. if we could get another guy of sheed's caliber i'd be pretty happy.

I really do want a player that is a tweener forward type off the bench. AK fits that description. He plays solid defense and when Rondo is out, he can't play PG, but he is a good playmaker at least.
I would do either AK + 1st rounder for Ray. Or AK for Ray straight up if Ray would be bought out.
Perkins / Wallace
Garnett / Davis / Kirilenko
Pierce / Kirilenko / Daniels
Allen / Daniels
Rondo / House
That is a damn good team. When some of these huge contracts are off the books in the coming years, it'd give us some better flexibility as well.

Only way I'd do the AK47/Ray trade is if Ray's coming back. AK47 seems too injured prone and has never shown any greatness, he's a solid roleplayer I'd like to have on the team, but he's nowhere near as good as Ray. Ray has looked like our best player on occasion. Remember him in the Chicago series where he kept hitting buzzerbeaters.
Also I'm not sure if they'd be willing to waive Ray because they might need him for the playoffs. He always plays well against Kobe etc.

If Ray gets traded, bought out and then signs here. Do we have his Bird rights? I mean can we still pay Ray in the offseason not from our MLE but just by his Bird rights?
I think not, and thats a problam..

Love Kirilinko, hate his contract. Wouldn't trade Ray for him, because I don't want to go without Ray for 30 days. Would love to have Kirilinko on this team though. Wish he didn't make so much money so we can trade expirings for him.

Utah is tied for the 8th seed out West 3 games out of first in their division, they are in desperate need for a player like Ray Allen why would they cut him? They are trying to make their team better not get under the cap.

Jazz fan here, I don't think the Jazz would even trade AK for Ray staight up let along with the NY pick. AK has been an all star and still could be if in the right situation and I believe even though he doesn't get the minutes as Boozer they still value him (mainly for defense) as an all star. And he is still young....Ray isn't.
Though that said I would love to see the Jazz make a trade this year more than any other time they seem to be stuck in the 4-8 playoff spot and can't get over the hill to greener pastures.
