Why we should NOT give Ray the ball to win

... he cannot handle the ball.
I remember people here complaining that Ray doesn't get the ball in the clutch. This is exactly the reason why!
He cannot handle the ball and cannot create room for himself.
Thank God for Rondo to save his ass.
Must say Ray hit clutch 3's ... but that ball needs to go to Pierce.

Let me clarify, I have no problem if he catches and shoots but that's it. He should not be handling the ball.

Don't try exaggerate what I'm saying. This was a point of debate a while back that people were arguing we should give Allen the ball over Pierce. This was an example as to why we should NOT. This is not the first time also where he has turned it over and/or struggled to get his own shot up.
Allen is strictly catch and shoot ... not to set his own shot.

I don't understand why people love to hate on Ray? I mean you couldn't have gotten this thread up faster, hell the games still on.

No doubt I was fuming when I made the thread ... but it has nothing to do with me "loving" to hate Ray.
I like Ray on our team but I strongly disagree with him getting the ball in the situation he was in. Like I said initially, a lot of people were making the case for him to get the ball in that situation and I hope that now they can see that it's not a great idea.
More importantly, I hope Doc realises it.
Again ... I have no problem if he caught and shot but not to create his own shot.
Simple?

Ray Allen is the most underappreciated Celtics player I have ever seen. People are not going to fully appreciate him until he is gone.
Very Sad!

anyone not 100% convinced that if it was wade with the ball in his hands there, and ray playing D, there would have been a foul called?
probably that was a good no call but the refs are just absolutely wade's biatches. no idea why *cough*donaghy*cough*

Of course you don't have a ******* problem to give the ball to one of most clutch shooters in the league and even all time. In fact, it should be the opposite- you should be ******* happy and on your hands and knees praying to God or whatever you do/don't believe in everytime he shoots a three at the end of games- because we are damn lucky that we have a shooter like him that we can rely on- those threes at the end were huge.
And yes- I too thought that ball should have gone to someone else- not Pierce as usualy, only because he's not 100% (which you could see with the scoop shot a play ago...)- but to Rondo and then let him create for Ray/Pierce/Baby/ or try to get into the lane.

he was falling down as soon as he started to dribble the ball. it was ridiculous! anyone remember the inbounds play he made to lose the san antonio game last year? I love many things about ray including his incredible clutch shooting but there are times like tonight when he makes me absolutely insane. You CANNOT lose the ball in that situation. I think he was the right guy to go to but doc should have had some play to get him open because there's no way he can go one on one against dwayne wade and get his shot off. ditto for pierce tongiht. he clearly wasn't ready to come back although he gave a good effort.

Both Ray and Paul failed in their respective end-of-game plays. Ray's turned into a potential game winner for Wade; Paul's wasn't much better.
Fact is, the team executed best down the stretch with the ball in Rondo's hands. The Heat had no answers for him tonight. Rondo dominated overtime.

Of course you want the ball in Rondo's hands but here's the problem, a tied game with 5.5 left if you give the ball to Rondo Miami might just foul so he has to shoot free throws ( which we know is about 50/50 ) and then you give The Heat ( DWade ) one shot to win it. They won't foul Ray so you get to run down the clock and take the one shot to get the win.
Wade played good D ( Wade might have Fouled Ray ) There was no one open to pass to and Ray got stripped when he tried to make a move, but to say Allen should never handle the ball seems a little extreme.

I'm a Ray supporter and I agree with the thread premise. I either want Rondo setting someone up or Pierce with the ball at the end of the game. Ray's not the worst option, but when we have Pierce already, I'd rather him not handling the ball.
Nothing against Ray, because if I did have to pick one play to take a set shot at the end of the game, I'd take Ray over anyone else on the team.

Agree with the main premise. I do think it's funny how smooth the guy is in every other facet of the game, but when it comes to putting the ball on the floor, he is a spaz.
Catching and shooting, though, and I'm rolling with Ray Ray every time. The guy can run about half a mile in one possession and still drain a 3 while on the move after playing 40 minutes prior. The man is a machine. Players his age shouldn't be able to do stuff like that. Glad to have such a dedicated guy.

I don't think they'd foul Rondo unless it was very clear that he had an easy 2 points.

the OP makes a fair point, but i don't know about the word "NEVER". ray has lots of problems handling against guys who are stronger and more athletic than him, like Wade. against guys who are not as strong, even if they are taller, ray can do very well, since he knows how to use his body and create space for a shot. wade is just a bad matchup there. i partly blame Doc for putting ray in that situation. that's not his strength. i agree you inbound to rondo or even pierce, and set up ray for a catch and shoot off a screen, which is much more effective.

I don't agree with the "NEVER" part.
If Sasha is guarding Ray, give Ray the ball to win....

Last night I did not want the ball in PP’s hand on the last ISO play with about 55 seconds in the game. I wanted it in Rays hands. PP has been was out of sync all game I knew he would going to put up shot that was going to miss. Of course the next play they get the ball in Rays hands and he gets it stolen. As ParticleMan said had Wade or Kobe had the ball stolen from them there would have been a foul called in about .5 seconds.
Lastly keep in mind that Ray sealed up game 4 in the finals against the Lakers with an iso play. Bottom line it was a tough situation for whoever was going to get the ball. The heat were going to overplay anybody who got the ball and their was no way the refs were going to blow the wistle.
