Kendrick Perkins-How Much $ will he get?

Post#1 » by TheSheriff » Sat Jan 23, 2010 10:08 pm

Kendrick Perkins has been a defensive anchor in the middle since we got KG. He has really come into his own this past year. He is having the best year of his career. He is 25....

...He is a free agent at the end of next year.

How much can he get on the open market, How much is he worth to the Celtics, and how much will the team be willing to pay him?

I'm not sure and I've been wondering the same thing. People made a big deal about how much Rondo would make with his extension, I think this is just as important. At least with Rondo most people had the idea it would be around 10 mil a year. With Perk, I am clueless.

Perk isn't a free agent until the end of next season. However, at that time he will get something very similar to Rondo. Five years between $50mil and $55mil.

5 years/$40, I think Perk would sacrifice some dollars for long-term security. He's loyal and wants to play for the Celtics. He's probably worth $10 a year, though.

I would think he is worth more to us than other teams and there is a history of teams overpaying decent bigs. But around the 10 mil mark would be expected I would have thought.

Bigs do tend to get overpaid.

Look at Samuel Dalemberts contract: from 2007-08 to 2010-11 he averages nearly 11 million dollars per year.

Erick Dampier: 7 year, $73 million

Mehmet Okur: 2 years $21 million

Chandler: 6 years $63 million

Now a lot of those were signed during a different CBA, so Perkins won't get 6 or 7 years. Nevertheless it just shows that teams are willing to throw tons of money at centers. I doubt that anyone here would say that Perkins is not more talented than any of those players. If Perkins continues to improve his offense he is going to be getting a huge pay day (to the tune of at least 10 million dollars if not quite a bit more).

I'll say this: if we sign Perk to anywhere near Rondo numbers, we'll tie down this franchise for years to come with little hope of winning a championship. You only pay all-stars that type of money. This is probably why we dangled Perk this summer a little bit and I expect his name to be coming up in rumors more and more.

Who knows, but I do know one thing, and that is you don't base future decisions on moronic one's made by past GMs, such as Dalembert, Dampier, Chandler, etc..

Dampier and Okafor's contracts are probably the sugar plum fairies dancing in front of Perk's agent. All I can say is that I hope the C's are able to negotiate him down to 8 million range. He's a very solid big man, but he's not the kind of guy who can scale his game up to another level.

I wonder if he will take less for being a turnover machine.

We might get a hometown discount of 7 million a year. I don't want to overpay for him because it would screw up our rebuilding efforts.

There are not many defensive center's in the league...it'll be a bargain if you guys lock him for that amount. Also, from the limited games I have watched he has been improving his hook shot. I think he will some where in $10-12 million per year

5 years, $55mm.

Although it's hard to tell. That's my guess assuming he improves as much next year as he has this year. If he plateaus, more like 5 years, $45mm. Definitely a 5 year contract though I can't imagine the Celtics not wanting to hang onto him for as long as possible.

If the Thunder GM is smart.. this could be one time that overpaying could actually be worth it for the greater good of the team (or does that just mean u didnt overpay? lol)

he would anchor that team defensively and fits right in age wise with what they are trying to do

i think he will sty in boston, will probably cost around 8mil per season for us.. probably take 10+ for him to consider another team

We can give him a 6 year deal becuase we have his Bird Rights. I think a 6 year, 50 Million contract is good... I think Perk is the kind of guy that will have a hard time adjusting to a new place and new teammates (off-court wise) so he will probably stay even for a 5/35 deal...
