Tony Allen + no more injuries = ?????
For all of the negatives attributed to Tony Allen there is definitely NBA skill and talent there. Thinking back to before he did his knee he was a consistent 20 points for a while and brought a lot of positives to the team. He was never going to be an All Star but he could definitely have been a quality starter on a winning team.
What I've see since then is a player who has had confidence issues due to injuries and inconsistent playing time and also looks like he has been playing with a solid coat of rust on his game ever since. To me this seems obvious with some of the ball handling issues and finishing around the ring. He looks like someone who hasn't been able to practice properly for a long time. And what the hell has happened to his shooting form, it looks dreadful now. How can a professional player with all those coaches be allowed to break the mechanics on their shot so much?
So the question is, if he doesn't get another injury for the remainder of his career and get a full season of getting 20-25 minutes a game, what can he become? Will he ever "get it"? Can he fulfil the potential I still have a small amount of hope he can and become a quality starter in this league?
Personally I am not sure but he has shown enough in his disrupted career so far that it is still a possibility. Maybe it will happen with another team.
Thoughts?

no way he's near being an all-star.
solid role player, good defense, low bb iq, entertaining dunks, expendable though

= a decent trade chip. Let's get rid of him before we have to watch him get carted off the floor.

Strong 4th wing player. Makes enough mistakes to keep the coach and front office uneasy about depending upon him as a prolonged starter, so he isn't likely to be the primary backup wing.
Overall, best comparison is probably Dahntay Jones. Dahntay takes better care of the ball; Tony gets to the free throw line at a higher clip and gets more steals.

TA of the 2007 season (before his injury) was nasty. I think he can get to that level again. But I'm biased towards Tony (I still wear his jersey to games)

Wait, what?
+1. He can't dribble, or shoot. And for all the talk about his defensive abilities, he falls for any and all pump fakes, which speaks to his low BB IQ. And then he gets the look on his face like you just kicked his dog.

You build a very quantitative argument. I would like to subcribe to your newsletter.

One other thing, I think it sort of depends who your 1 and 3 are with him which makes our situation a challenge. If they both shoot well then he would fit well as a slasher and perimeter defender. Pierce can shoot, Rondo not so much.

I like him for defense, undependable otherwise, so he's a bench role player with holes in his game for his position, like Glen Davis.
Healthy, he's worth his salary.
Borderline all-star? Maybe in the D league.

TA is an NBA starter right now. He's better than most SG starters in that his offense is decent, and on defense he can take over a game, especially against a weak passing team. This kind of player complements the showtime scorer at the 1 or 3 that doesn't play defense. And there are a lot of teams in that boat. A net PER of +2.9 at the SG position.

TA desrves a better role and contract than he'll get on the Celtics. I love to watch him go in the zone. Therre are very few players that can and chose to go in the zone on defense.
We're going to get about 75 cents on the dollar and Larry Bird could have had him for nothing. He's still a bargain. The Celtics are in a win win situation. We win if we keep him and everyone wins if we move him.
