Agreed.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't see much to like in Melky. He doesn't hit for a high average, he doesn't get on base much, he doesn't have a ton of speed, he has pretty much no power. He's got good range and a great arm, but a no bat/good glove (great arm) #9 hitter doesn't get me too excited.
I also don't see anything close to the 25 HR power potential that BG sees in him. We'll see.

Jacoby Ellsbury.
I just think outside of New York and New York lovers, Melky gets seriously underrated. He's younger than Jacoby, he's been in the majors since 2006, he's always been incredibly young for his league and held his own, he has one of the best arms in CF, he's an overall good defender, he has significantly more power potential than Ellsbury.
He's going to be 23 almost all of next season and it'll be his third season in the majors.
I'll take Ellsbury for now and Melky for the future.

Defense is a slight edge to Melky at this point. Speed is more important than arm strength for a CF, and there's no doubt Jacoby is faster, but Melky gets a great jump on balls and has an arm thats about 50 times better than Jacoby's.
But offense goes to Jacoby by a pretty significant margin. He's a prototypical leadoff guy- great contact hitter, unbelievably fast, fantatic base stealer. Melky's a pretty mediocre hitter at the moment, though he is extremely young, but I don't see him ever becoming the type of offensive spark Ellsbury is.
OTOH, Melky is younger...
Tough call. I'd say Ellsbury, but it could go either way.

Ellsbury is only a year older.

I want to see what Ellsbury does for a full year in this league before I make a judgement. I don't think Melky is going to be a plus hitter, but I don't think Ellsbury is either.
Ellsbury has more range in the outfield but Melky's arm is an absolute weapon in CF and Ellsbury's arm doesn't even compare.

Ellsbury, and it really isn't that close. Jacoby will be a leadoff hitter with good OBP and 50 steal potential for a long time. Melky will be a bottom of the order hitter for most of his career.

Yanks fan here,,,Ellsbury the better player....
I love melky but on any other team he'd be a 4th outfielder...he starts at CF for us because we really dont need him to hit at all, just use that rocket arm of his...
