Yankees
C- Yogi Berra
1b- Lou Gehrig
2b- Tony Lazzeri
3b- A-rod (Greg Nettles would go here if you consider A-rod has only played with the NYY for a limited time)
SS- Derek Jeter
LF- Joe Dimaggio (CF is the deepest position, so Joltin' Joe moves over)
CF- Mantle
RF- Babe Ruth
DH-Reggie Jackson

SP-Whitey Ford
SP- Ron Guidry
SP- Red Ruffing
SP-Lefty Gomez
SP- Andy Pettitte
CL- Marino Rivera

Red Sox:
C- Carlton Fisk
1b- Jimmie Foxx
2b- Bobby Doerr
3b- Wade Boggs
SS- Joe Cronin (could be Nomar)
LF- Manny Ramirez (LF is by far the Red Sox deepest position)
CF- Tris Speaker (had a few great years then was traded)
RF- Ted Williams (he did play here his rookie year)
DH-Big Papi Ortiz

SP- Roger Clemens
SP- Pedro Martinez
SP- Cy Young
SP- Lefty Grove
SP- Smokey Joe Wood
CL- Bob Stanley (papelbon needs to pitch more before he claims this spot)

The Yankees have a better lineup, no doubt about that. The Red Sox have four of the greatest pitchers of all time, while the Yankees pitchers are not quite as good. So who would win in seven games?

If the games are set up so that Pedro can pitch in 3 of the games I'll take the Red Sox. Otherwise it's the Yankees.

I'd put A-Rod at short and Charlie Keller in LF. Probably Red Rolfe at 3B unless Nettles' defense really was that great. DiMaggio as the DH over Jackson. Maybe switch Keller and DiMaggio; I don't know how good a fielder Keller was.

Definitely Yaz in LF over Manny. And Tris Speaker in CF.

Wow. Pedro v. Ruth. Pedro would drill him in his ass.

By these criteria:

In general a player has to have at least two great years or three good years to be considered a member of a team. But some teams (especially expansion teams) don't have a player who had ANY good years at a certain position. So, for example, the Padres get Alomar at second out of pity.

Note: Players are strictly judged by how they performed for each particular team. In the case of Renteria on the Marlins, for example, you're supposed to think of him strictly as he was on the Marlins. The Marlins get no credit for how Renteria has performed in St. Louis. (But he still might be Florida's best SS, of course.) That goes for all the players and pitchers.

Red Sox

3B - Wade Boggs
OF - Tris Speaker
OF - Ted Williams
1B - Jimmie Foxx
OF - Carl Yastrzemski (over Jim Rice, Dwight Evans)
DH - Manny Ramirez (over Mo Vaughn, David Ortiz)
SS - Nomar Garciaparra (over Joe Cronin)
2B - Bobby Doerr
C - Carlton Fisk

SP - Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens, Cy Young, Lefty Grove, Smokey Joe Wood
(over Babe Ruth, Carl Mays, Ernie Shore, Dutch Leonard, Luis Tiant, Mel Parnell, Tim Wakefield)
RP - Left over SP + Ellis Kinder, Dick Radatz (over Bob Stanley?)

Yankees

SS - Derek Jeter (over Rizzuto)
OF - Joe DiMaggio
OF - Babe Ruth
1B - Lou Gehrig
OF - Mickey Mantle
3B - Alex Rodriguez (over Graig Nettles, Red Rolfe, Boyer?)
C - Yogi Berra (over Bill Dickey, Munson)
DH - Dave Winfield (over Mattingly?, Reggie?, Dickey, Earle Combs, Bernie, Rickey Henderson, Charlie Keller, O'Neill, Heinrich)
2B - Joe Gordon (over Willie Randolph, Tony Lazzeri?)

(The Yankees' best actual DH was a sub-par Don Baylor or Giambi)

SP - Whitey Ford, Red Ruffing, Ron Guidry, Lefty Gomez, Andy Pettitte
(over Mussina?, Carl Mays, Chesbro, Stottlemyre, Catfish Hunter, Clemens, Wells, Hoyt, Pennock, Cone, Chandler, Reynolds, Lopat, Raschi)
RP - Left over SP + Mariano Rivera, Goose Gossage (over Sparky Lyle, Dave Righetti, Wetteland)

Even with ARod gaining all-time franchise eligibility per my standards, Sox pitching still >>>> Yankees pitching, so I think the Sox pull out a 7 game victory even though the Yankees win a couple games 19-8.

Imo, the red sox pitching is so great that they would be unbeatable in a seven game series. Pedro was the most dominant starter ever. Joe Wood's peak was nearly as good as Pedro (but much shorter). Clemens, Cy Young, and Lefty Grove all have legitimate cases for greatest pitcher ever. The Yankees have never really had one of the best pitchers in the game (they only had roger for a very short time). Since pitching beats hitting the Red Sox beat the Yankees in seven games. The Yankees offense might win more games if they played a season, but in a shorter series i would rather have the red sox.

Yanks have the hitting and the Sox have the pitching, great matchup.

I'll go with the Yankees because they've got the best player ever, Babe!
