Also I see Willie has said after the last 2 games now that CJ isn’t feeling right. If that Is the case, why is he getting so many minutes and so many shots?

For the life of me i cant understand why Zion cant move his feet in space anymore. His switchability was supposed to be his calling card defensively. I don't even think its a weight issue, dude's technique is just awful. He's got to be better

This team needs to go to a legit hierarchy when it comes to the offense. Every game Zion and BI need to put up 20 shots. Then whoever else has the hot hands that game can get their shots. Also if you’re not going to use Jonas, trade him to get a bug that you want to actually play.
Not going to lie, starting to think Willie Green might be the Mark Jackson of this team. Came in to a young team and got them to play hard, but also put a limit on their ceiling because he didn’t know how to properly use the talent on his roster.
I have nothing good to say so I'm biting my tongue.
Haha
I get BI had foul issues, but the dude still played 30 minutes and only got 12 shots. Zion had 12 points heading into the 4th… Jonas against a team that doesnt have a legit big only played 20 minutes, oh and the Pels couldn’t get a rebound to save their life in the 4th. Having a big that gobbles up boards could’ve been nice…
Again I totally get that this isn’t a championship level team yet, but that also doesn’t mean this roster isn’t being used correctly.
Good thing they used a top 10 pick on a guard. You’d think if you had a guard go on a 3 game stretch where he has 28 points on 12-41 shooting, that top 10 pick might get some legit minutes in that time. Nope 3 straight DNPs.
This is Mark Jackson all over again. I was watching GS a lot at that time. People were pumped because Mark got them to play hard every night and a bad franchise finally started to look solid. But after a couple years it was clear beyond motivating his guys to play hard, he had no clue what he was doing. Starting to sound familiar…
I can’t bite my tongue haha. The misuse of this roster is becoming laughable.
I told myself I wasn't going to say anything. What's frustrating is Green is making the same mistakes over & over. It's insantiy by definition & he's taking us all for a ride. indicating he may not know what the problem is & if he does, he can't do anuthing about it.
This team has a lot of mouths to feed & Green is having a rough time balancing their strengths & weaknessess. He's got 3 main options that are subpar defensively & seemingly, Jonas is the only one of the 3 he's capable of benching consistently as CJ's play has been very much lacking on both sides of the ball the entire season to date, for whatever reason/excuse (finger).
Definition of insanity - CJ once again led the team in FGA's (17) on 30% efficiency. He also had 5 TO's to his 7 assists but didn't see the bench. I really don't have to go beyond this point to explain what's wrong & why Pels can't get more out of BI & Zion when BI was effectively the 3rd option in this game ... This current product, is what a CJ led team looks like. Poor efficiency & no defense. NO's has tried to compliment CJ with Nance's strong defense & are 1-5 when they bench Jonas. Now, replace CJ with the rookie Daniels making rookie mistakes no less & see something ...
Jonas had 11 boards in 20 mins on a night as u mention Pelicans got destroyed on the boards & in 2nd chance points. Instead of finding a way to make Jonas more viable option to have on court not pairing him with CJ's perimeter defense & inefficiency. Jonas found the bench in favor of an inefficient CJ. Like I said, Raptors tried to replace Jonas with Bizz & Ibaka to compensate Derozan & couldn't make it work because Jonas was not the real problem ...
What Green doesn't seem to understand is the need for Nance to considerably outplay Jonas on the defensive end speaks to his gaurds inefficiency & poor defense. That's why despite Nance playing well in everyone one of these games, they continue to lose. Green is going to find it hard to compensate 30% on volume. 5 TO's, weak perimeter defense & ball pressure.
Jonas was a team high -17 if NO's were utilizing on off. When he left the game it was a 2 possession game 3rd Q. You would think if he was "THE" problem to that point indicated by +/-, they would have pulled out the remainder of the game. Any guesses why they couldn't ?.
CJ for Irvings expiring contract. Open that roster spot for Daniels. He could be developing in these terrible losses instead of riding the vet to them where there's nothing gained.

Lol simple & to the point. If I saw this post first, it would have saved me a paragraph.
Why ?
Insanity.
Is CJ his new Temple from last season ?
Man Daniels not hitting 2 FT's after giving strong minutes against Luka & Lebron really cost him. lol

WG if u reading this... Ever watch the movie top gun.
The pilot loses his plane & kills his co-pilot, he wanted to quit flying because of an epic mistake. The instructor made it a point to get him back in the air as soon as possible because nothing cures a bad moment, like a next moment.
What's that saying for shooters ? you have to have a short memory...
That's where confidence is bred, in trust & belief.
Benching Daniels for missing 2 FT's, is not a good move. Especially when this team/Zion needs perimeter defense & him to develop as fast as he possibly can.

Re: Road to a Championship start here, 2022 Draft.
I know I’m going to sound like a homer on this, but just saw that the Bucks are open to trade Grayson Allen. Pels should be all over this.
Grayson is a legit sharpshooter, he has good size at 6’4. Isn’t a stud defender but is a solid-good defender. Put him as the 5th starter. We would get elite shooting in the starting lineup. Get someone who’s entire skill set is playing off the ball. And it helps the defense as well.
This helps if Willie doesn’t believe Jose is good enough to be a starter, or if Daniels isn’t ready (I also have big questions about team defense when it comes to Daniels).

I watched Allen in Memphis, Bane upgraded him as the starting 2 guard, he was routinely suffering small injuries. Streaky shooter, surprising defense & athleticism but he doesn't correct the issue. I think all of Graham, CJ & Allen would be in the same vein.
If CJ is not moved, he needs to come off the bench to better balance both units but he's CJ making 30 per... not so simple.
As I mentioned at the point of trade. They rushed the build (Daniels not getting development mins), they capped themselve (3 max contracts), they added another non defender to 3 & they obligated themselves to CJ's name & Career.
CJ is currently the teams #1 option. Therein, lies the problem.
I took this quote from a Blazzers fan as we hear the excuse of illness.
"As a blazer fan this is a typical cj cold stretch. And he’s just gonna shoot his way out of it. He’ll be hot again soon. But I feel y’all’s pain. Especially with the options surrounding him on the team in BI and Zion"
NO's don't have the defensive chops to withstand CJ having to shoot his way out of slumps where he leads the teams in attmepts, lol. It's one thing to shoot 30%, it's another to shoot 30% on volume. Once again reason despite Nance's defense & strong performances to date, Pels are 1-5 when they have to turn to him.Re: Road to a Championship start here, 2022 Draft.

The reason I say Grayson is because he is a legit shooter (40% on 5 attempts over the last 4 seasons), moves very well off the ball, doesn’t need to dribble the ball. He’s not small at 6’4 and he’s athletic. And then ya defensively he is a positive.
He’s the best catch and shoot shooter out of the 3. He’s the best defender out of the 3. He’s the biggest and best athlete out of the 3 and he’s the best off ball over out of the 3.
If you were to go with the idea of BI/Zion being the primary on ball guys with the starting lineup. Grayson would be a great 5th starter with them.

I'm pretty sure that is the argument I heard for CJ when they traded for him. 40% shooter, historically great catch & shoot option to play off ball to Zion.
Allen might move better without the ball & be the best defender of the 3 but NO's already gave up the 15th pick for Graham. Hart+ for CJ & his 4yr max extension. How do u move off one of these 2 & get Allen without tossing more value out the window ?.
I'd put consideration to flipping CJ's 4yrs with Irving's expiring.

Re: Road to a Championship start here, 2022 Draft.
I saw a post on another forum that confirms what I've been posting regarding CJ. This poster claims CJ's usage is at a csareer low which is kind of true but factually isn't. He's at a 3-4yr low in usage for him.
The last time CJ had a usage of 25.6 % was in 2019 25.5%. I found an interesting trend when I looked closer at his usage. Which backs what I've been saying about making CJ the 6th man & #1 option off the bench.
2022 split from Portland to NO's.
26% usage in Portland where he shoots a career average 52% eFG%
29.4% usage in NO's without Zion, where he shoots a career high 56% eFG on higher volume.
He needs to be the #1 option when on court but shouldn't be with ZIon & BI. Unfortunately all the talk of CJ benefiting from NO's/Zions offensive gravity, CJ is shooting a 12yr career low 29% from 3, nearly .100% points lower than his rookie season. It could be his finger but the whole point of CJ was to take advantage of these open 3's & catch & shoot situations. Which for whatever reason to date has been an abject failure. If his finger is not right, give him time to let it heal & give the rookie some development mins..

Ya and this has always been my issue with CJ. CJ style fits in only 2 roles.
1: As youre #1 or #2 option. Like ive always said its very easy to have an offense with 2 ball dominant players because there just is so many possessions and time to touch the ball for 2 guys. This is why CJ was fine next to Dame and fine with just BI. He could still be an on ball scorer next to those guys because there was enough time for both guys to eat. You cant do this with 3 main guys though.
2. As a 6th man. Similar role as above but minutes are limited to usually 20-25 minutes and with coming off the bench its much easier to stagger the lineups where all 3 primary scorers are never on the court together.
Now the problem with the first option is, CJ has never been good enough. Even prime CJ wasnt good enough to be a #1 or #2 option. Whether it was the fact that he wasnt as efficient of a scorer as most thought of him, or the fact his defense has always been very bad (even if he tries).
CJ shouldve been moved to the 6th man role a long time ago, but Portland never was able to draft a legit #2 scoring option, or they never made the big trade to get one. So CJ kind of just kept that role by default. He also put up okay enough numbers where people werent screaming for his role to get relegated. Then he started getting paid like a top 2 option and then you add the salary aspect to it as well.
But ya a big reason why I was against CJ being in the starting lineup all summer long is the fact he cant play off ball. Everything about his game is based on on-ball scoring. Ya he is a good 3pt shooter for his career, but we have to look at how he gets his 3s. Prime CJ to now, only about 65% of his 3s are assisted on. That is ridiculously low. Then factor in only about 25% of his 2pt shots are assisted on, it clearly shows CJ isnt a catch and shoot guy. He gets his shooting rhythm by dribbling, not catch and shoot. It also shows he isnt much of an off ball mover either. So none of that screams a guy that could easily transition to being a good off ball 3rd option scorer.
Also add in the fact he is 31, he is at the point where its not uncommon for us to start seeing smaller guys age. He is also a little thicker than he used to be as well.
Overall he just isnt a good 3rd option to go with BI and Zion. And the fact that the offense is basically trying to do an equal trio thing between the 3 guys is limiting all of them. Some nights CJ is going to put up 20+ shots and dominate the ball, while Zion is the #2 option. That leads to BI picking up the scraps and never finding a rhythm. Sometimes its BI and CJ and Zion gets left out of getting a rhythm and so on. The offense needs a true hierarchy. No matter what BI and Zion need to be the primary guys and get their 20 shots. Its up to everyone else to find their spots and also BI and Zion to allow other guys to find their spots. But BI and Zion need their shots no matter what.
Boston had this issue before. When they had Tatum/Brown/Kemba/Hayward all kind of looking for shots. Boston finally tanked that idea and theyve gone to the Tatum/Brown get their touches and shots every game, everyone else figure it out. Theyre a better team now because of it.

Good post. Nice reference to Boston & how their 2 primary options were weighted down by other ill fitting options.
Imagine Tatum & Brown defering to a 3rd option putting up 20 shots on 30% efficiency. That's something like 40 potential points left on the table every game. Not even considering the poor fit on the defensive end.

Imagine Tatum & Brown defering to a 3rd options putting up 20 shots on 30% efficiency. That's something like 40 potential points left on the table every game. Not even considering the poor fit on the defensive end.
Yup and I remember being on the Celtics board a lot at that time and myself and many Celtics fans were saying the same thing. Ya the overall team offensive rating doesnt look bad, but this offense isnt working. Way too many stretches of inconsistent play and really feels like theyre limiting themselves trying to get everyone involved every game. Tatum and Brown showed they were ready to take over the offense and it was going to be their offense. And it has worked out.
I know you and I have been saying this since the CJ trade when it came to talking about this year with Zion back. Hand the keys over to BI and Zion. Let them both be in the 4-5 Time per Possession area, let them get their 20+ shots per game. Then fill the roster out with guys that can fit around that. Because the benefit of doing that with guys like BI and Zion, is both are willing passers. So both can get theirs, while also recognizing if a rotation guy is on and letting them ride that wave.
Again trio offenses dont work, unless one person in that trio is an elite off ball player like a Klay or a prime Bojan. Those guys can put up 15+ shots a game and get you 20+ ppg while playing alongside 2 primary guys. Because prime Klay and Bojan dont need to dribble to do it. Its the fact that CJ needs to dribble to find a rhythm which makes him a bad 3rd option. Best bet with CJ is having him be 6th man, limiting his minutes to 20-25 per game, staggering the lineups so all 3 guys arent out there at once.

Forget the score & I know it's a struggling Houston team but I like alot of what happened this half.
CJ still cold but that was probably his best half of the season managing a game & not forcing offense.
The offense only sputtered when they tried to isolate. That inverted PNR that SVG started looked unstoppable. The best the top 3 option have looked all yr.
If Pels were clicking on all cylinders, Houston would be cooked already.

That lineup to start the 3rd had it cooking. Green's early sub led to a 14-2 run for Houston. 18pt game now 6.

87-86 Houston to end the 3rd. Why sub a unit that was cooking early ? Green iced his own team. 18pt lead to 1 pt deficit. 23-4 run.

Houston went on a 30-4 run after NO's went up 18.
It's now 100-100 & this teams talent is bailing Green out. Jose's energy helped to flip that lost momentum. The team was collectively choking.

BI's not a #1 option. this isnt a Zion vs BI thing, i just dont see it with him at this point. Time per possesion, i get it, but the problem is hes not super effective off-ball and his on-ball ability doesn't compensate for that quite enough. I think its hard to deny at this point, maybe he proves me wrong in the later years of his prime but i dunno

This game was more uncomfotable than it should have been.

He's struggled to start the yr but he sure looked like one vs the Suns.
Time will tell.
Return to New Orleans Pelicans
