OT: Visiting New Orleans from the 24-28th. Any advice?

Post#1 » by StatLine » Fri Mar 23, 2018 7:43 am

Hey all,

I’m StatLine from the Raptors board and I’m going to be in NOLA in a few days to explore and absorb what the city has to offer. Just wanted some suggestions, advice, and tips that locals could offer to a visitor. So far, I’ll be going on a plantation + swamp tour and I’ll be attending the Pelicans vs. Trailblazers game on the 27th.

I’m looking for help on:
Food establishment recommendations?
Is there any ettiquite unique to New Orleans that I should know about so as not to be surprised or disrespect anyone?
Places to see?
Night life?
Any dangerous areas I should avoid?

Anything you guys can share would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

And yes, I’m rooting for the home team.

This is a really good reference. You're also in luck. It's Crawfish season and the weather is great right now.

Food establishment recommendations?

You're going to want:
Oysters (where ever they're cheap. Casimentos, Superior seafood, Felix, Luke, cooter browns, Dragos at the Hilton (Chargrilled oysters))
Poboy (shrimp) (lots of different places, just pick one that's convinient but I like Parkway, Guys, and Domilise's)
Gumbo (100s of different opinions)
Crawfish, (anywhere, any festival you find would be best, but even the local grocery store Rouses sells good crawfish this time of year)

My favorite place to take someone from out of town is Mandinas. Which is relatively cheap NO food, and definitely a New Orleans style establishment. Franky and Johnny's is an even cheaper version of that and usually has crawfish as well as oysters but is a local dive.

Lots of good non New Orleans food too. Vietnamese, Itallian, Israeli (shaya is real popular right now). Lots of interesting new resturants along magazine street.

If price isnt a consideration there are billions of good returants and they are easily searchable on the web, even the tourist traps in the french quarter serve really good food, just pricier than it should be imo. just trying to give you my more hidden local favorites.

optional treats:
Begniets (the famous Cafe du Monde on the river is amazing because it's right by the French market and outdoors but it's always crowded, you should know that there's a second one nearby in the riverwalk mall if their's a line), Hansen's Snow Blizz Get a smoothie king smoothie while you're at it.

Is there any ettiquite unique to New Orleans that I should know about so as not to be surprised or disrespect anyone?

dont wear beads.
it's New Orlinz or New Orlunz, not Nawlins not New OrlEEns
Dont bring up the Pelicans reccord vs the raptors

Places to see? Night Life?

French Quarter/downtown:
Bourbon Street (VERY touristy, but it's still got a lot going on)
the Riverwalk
French Market
Frenchmen Street
The Aquarium
Harah's Casino

Uptown/Garden District:
Magazine Street (lots of shops, bars, resturants)
Take the street car
The zoo
The Park
The Fly (River)
the historic garden district stuff

Any dangerous areas I should avoid?

Nah, just be safe.

The plantation and swamp tour stuff is all pretty standard and will take a lot more of your energy than you think. Look to see if there are any festivals of any kind during your visit.
