Sources: Posey agrees to four-year deal with Hornets
By Marc Stein
ESPN.com

LAS VEGAS -- The reigning NBA champions are about to lose their glue guy.

NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com on Wednesday that James Posey has agreed to a four-year deal with the New Orleans Hornets worth an estimated $25 million.

Because of luxury-tax concerns, Boston was reluctant to offer Posey, 31, more than a two-year deal in spite of his considerable contributions to the Celtics' first championship since 1986.

Marc Stein covers the NBA for ESPN.com.

I'd like to know more about this deal. I'm kind of hoping it's for 3 years with a team option for the 4th year. We'll see. Good luck Hornets!

Congrats. You guys are getting a great team player. He will do a lot of things that don't show up on the box score. This, coupled with the continued improvements of your other players, will hopefully put you guys over the top as the class of the West.

I'm a Celtics fan, and I can't help but admit that this is a disturbingly good move for New Orleans, and it's not so good for us. Posey has played a very key role on two of the last three championship teams. I can also tell you that he is just as important to a team as Shaq, D-Wade, KG, Pierce, and Ray have been or ever will be, and those guys would tell you the same thing. Miami would not have won in 2006 without him (although they wouldn't have won without Bennett Salvatore either, LOL). We definitely would not have won it all this year without Posey. He is the kind of guy that all championship teams absolutely must have in order to win.

In James Posey, you are getting a guy who will give 110% every game, no matter whether it's a throwaway game against the Grizzlies in January or a Game 7 against LA or San Antonio. He is a wonderful teammate, and you will see that firsthand at the beginning of every game. Posey, whether he's starting or not, will always embrace the other starters at the scorer's table right before tipoff and give them pep talks. The message is always different for every player and for every game. He is a tremendous leader with the competitive fire that really rubs off on his teammates. People talk about Garnett's intensity and how it changed the whole attitude of the Celtics, but I believe Posey was just as instrumental in that.

On the court, Posey is a clutch shooter who can always knock down open shots when they matter the most. He is also an unbelievable defender who can defend guards and forwards equally well. He will be key in containing guys like Kobe, Manu, Carmelo, T-Mac, Brandon Roy, and others.

All in all, this is a great move for the Hornets, and one that could well put them over the top. Posey very well could have made a difference for the Hornets this past year. The Hornets very well could be your 2009 NBA Champions.

That's kind of what I'm afraid of.

Thanks Celts fans. I just hope this works out for the Hornets.

Overpaid a bit, but he definitely fills a need.

Cavs fan here. I would've LOVED to get Posey, so congrats. Your team has been one of my favorites in the West, and will likely be my favorite in the west this year.

Even though I wanted him to be a Cav, I'm also happy cuz 1) he's in the west 2) he's not on Boston 3) we don't have to have a 4 year-contract, we need room for Lebron & another major free agent in 2010 (which right now is looking very good)

Cheers!

This is one of the best moves that has been made since Brand to the sixers.

The Hornets were so close to being the number one team in the west until the Spurs realized you stop Paul you stop the whole team. Once that happen there was not one hornet that could create his own shot off the dribble.

Posey brings a more atheltic and creative two guard to the Hornets and not only that two championship rings. Also he will spread the floor with his three point shooting allow Paul to slash and give a more consistant option.

I am a Miami fan, that and I truly believe that this move and mabe another postman will get them to win the West.

Go New Orleans Hornets!!!!!!

No doubt that Posey is an excellent role player and every good team would love to have him but lets not get carried away.

Sorry to see him go. Great all around contributer. Get ready for a lot more man-hugs New Orleans!

I hope we don't have to line up against Posey in the Finals next year.

Sonics fan here(SEATTLE, definitely not OKC). I've liked Posey's game going back to his Memphis days and have always thought he was a little bit underated. What a great fit for your team. I can see him being a Byron Scott kind of player.

The Hornets have been one of my favorite teams going back to their Charlotte days and this gives me another reason, besides losing my Sonics, to get behind the team even more. I agree that besides Philly getting Brand this is one of the best signings of the summer, even though Posey isn't a highend star.

Huge pickup IMO... You guys just grabbed a big piece... Glad he is not in Boston anyore but hate to face him four times a year now... Wish we didnt have all our money tied up in Ariza, Walton and Radman... We need a solid small forward...
