OT: What to do in New Orleans?

I'm hoping that some of you guys can give me some advice on places to go. I'm in town now through the weekend and I have a woman flying in on Friday to spend the weekend with me. I've been here a couple of times before but don't really remember the places I went or how I got there :)

I'm looking for suggestions on places to go that aren't dive bars or mainstream run-of-the-mill type places. I brought a couple of suits to wear and don't mind spending a bit of money if there are really cool places to go. What are the best jazz clubs to go to? What are some must sees? What are the best restaurants (that also happen to have vegetarian options)? I'm staying at the Marriott right on Canal.

Thanks in advance!

I hear the Palace Cafe on Canal St is a really nice restaurant. I've never been there but I hear it's good. I think it may actually be across the street from the Marriott. Also, Harrah's Casino has nice restaurants inside and a nice club called Masquerade. Lots of people also like Emeril's (Chef Emeril Lagasse's restaurant) on Tchoupitoulas St. or Emeril's Delmonico restaurant on St. Charles Ave.

Check out this site to get a few more ideas.

Hey, thanks man. I appreciate it. I checked out those places but I think I might have a tough time because I'm a vegetarian.

Someone at my hotel recommended Irene's, so I think I will check that out. It's a weird situation, but I have never actually met the woman who is staying with me in person. We met on Facebook and we've been talking for awhile. She's hot as hell so I want to plan something nice for when we meet. I was thinking that I'd take her for a walk on the river and then swing by Jackson Square and go to Irene's on St. Philip? Haven't really planned much beyond that, though I guess I'd want to take her to Cafe Du Monde at some point and maybe the Garden District to walk around during the day? I dunno.

If she likes to shop you should take her for a walk down Magazine Street. Magazine is a really long street that comes out to Canal Street but you have to go down many blocks before you get to the real shops. Most of the shops used to be homes that were converted into shops. Quite quaint. Maybe you can take a cab and get out where you see fit to begin shopping. I've never been to Irene's but it's hard to find a bad meal in New Orleans so I'm sure they'll have something for you to enjoy.

Thanks for the tip. Yeah, I'd like to go uptown to the Garden District at some point. Are the shops close to there? I was planning on checking it out tomorrow and was gonna run down St. Charles but may do Magazine instead as per your recommendation. Wanted to check out Slim Goodies and maybe August Moon, which are both supposed to be vegetarian friendly.
