The Braves Get: SP Greg Maddux, OF Brian Giles
The Padres Get: CF Jordan Schafer
The Braves have huge holes at LF and at the 5th rotation spot. Chuck James has been brutal, and Maddux should be about a league-average pitcher with the great Braves defense behind him. Plus, reuniting both Glavine and Maddux would have obvious PR benefits.
The left fielders for the Braves have been dreadful. Giles has been much better than I expected this year. This Braves team is good enough to win now, and this would take care of their two biggest lineup weaknesses.
The Padres are done contending this year and pick up a stud prospect. They really need impact bats in their system. Although Shafer is a good prospect to give up, Atlanta is still loaded with OF prospects in the form of Hernandez, Heyward and Brandon Jones.

The deal makes aboslutely no sense financially for the Braves, especially for a prospect with a lot more value than that. Giles makes $9 million this season and gets an extra $2 million per year if he's dealt. He and Maddux would have $21 million worth of pro-rated contracts and I highly doubt Liberty would be really thrilled about that. I don't think the Padres would be too anxious to have anything to do with the $2 million either. Giles also has a team option of $9 million (does it jump to $11 million?) for 2009 with a $3 million buyout. I don't think I'd be anxious to pick up the option and paying $3 million for him to leave isn't attractive either. I'm thinking from a financial standpoint the deal is more attractive without Giles in it given his age and money that's coming his way. The deal simply looks really bad for the Braves. On another note I was interested when this deal showed up after I suggested a Maddux-Schafer deal could happen at a different site over a week ago. Either someone thinks I'm smart or that's one funny coincidence.
