I Completely Maliced My Cash League

Post#1 » by Basketball Jesus » Mon Mar 31, 2008 2:10 pm

Ten-team 7x7 H2H league, I had the ninth pick.

C: Russell Martin
1B: Adrian Gonzalez
2B: Rickie Weeks
3B: David Wright
SS: Jhonny Peralta
OF: Curtis Granderson
OF: Pat Burrell
OF: Jeremy Hermida
OF: BJ Upton
CI: Miggy Cabrera
UTL: Joe Mauer
UTL: Nick Johnson

SP: Brandon Webb
SP: Javy Vazquez
SP: Matt Cain
SP: Rich Harden
RP: Francisco Rodriguez
RP: Jose Valverde
RP: Troy Percival
P: Zack Greinke
P: George Sherrill
P: Derek Lowe

BN: JD Drew
BN: Matt Garza
BN: Nate McLouth

My offense is rife with injury risk but oh man is it loaded to the tits with performance. The outfield is the riskiest of all but finding any kind of OF depth in a league that starts four generic OFs is tough going. Pitching depth-wise, I probably have the strongest staff in the league and the only one with four Opening Day closers.

Now, you may have noticed that I have two of the three best 3Bs in the game in Wright and Miggy. Do I sacrifice one for more dependability in the OF (and possibly at P) or do I keep both and work with what I got now?

I love this league because there are only two managers, other than me, that know baseball. Most of the others go out and buy whatever fantasy circular Borders has on sale that day, which inevitably leads to situations like the following:

Wright and Cabrera are two of the best hitters in baseball, period. Keep them both, regardless of position played, they will help your offense. Third is also a deep position so you are less likely to get value.

I'd move Mauer. I don't trust the Twins management to keep him healthy. Mike Redmond, he of the 89 OP+, DHed 17 times! last season. Why the hell is he DHing when his value is in his defense and Mauer's legs are a concern? They are doing things ass backwards and I fear that Mauer's leg injuries will keep him from ever fulfilling his potential and the Twins are not helping prevent said injuries. Catcher is a somewhat shallow spot in terms of top end talent so you could easily net an above average OF for Mauer and let someone else deal with the injury risk. mahalo

I was thinking of moving Mauer but, judging by where he fell in the draft (I nabbed him in the 12th round), I don

I'm assuming one of the extra categories in OBP or OPS? I am not as high on Hermida as I once was and he hasn't been model of health but I expect Drew to bounce back this year so your OF is decent if unspectacular.

Webb, Cain, Lowe, and Greinke will give you decent starts with either good peripherals or some wins. I also think Garza will put everything together so I am not terribly worried about your staff. Win may be tough to come by with Garza, Greinke, and Cain all being lucky to net double digits in wins.

I don't see you landing a top SP if you try to trade Mauer but I could see a top OF as more likely. The problem with Mauer is if he isn't in the C spot, a decent OF like Drew could probably out-produce him. You could also try finding another CI and moving Miggy to the UTL spot. Wait a few weeks into the season, find whatever homer drafted Varitek and then offer up Mauer to him. Mauer should stay healthy through April. mahalo

Surprisingly enough Varitek went undrafted. A team actually drafted Saltalamacchia, knowing full well he's in the minors, over Varitek.

OPS is our offensive cat which makes Hermida a bit more valuable if he can mash like he's supposed to.

Oh, and if you want to get into this league next year Chach, let me know. We draft live and the cost is now only $50. It's a pretty fun league.

Hermida, when he was a top prospect, was supposed to regularly be a 20-20 plus player. I don't think he has broken double digits in steals in a season and with his knee issues, I fear he will reach his potential. But if he stays healthy, he's still a solid OF. So is Burrell so I wouldn't worry as much about the OF.

Who does Salty's manager have for a catcher? That should be the kid you target a few weeks into the season when he realizes his catcher's spot sucks and Mauer, if healthy, is a top catching option. Just keep this Redmond DHing business quiet.

I can swing $50. Let me know next year and I'm there. mahalo

I think his catching tandem is Salty and Ramon Hernandez.

Salty is in AAA and Ramon Hernandez isn't any good. Tell him Mauer can hit .400 and steal 15 bases.

I like your team. Javier Vazquez is like the most underrated pitcher in fantasy. When did you pick him up?

9th pick and you end up with Wright and Cabrera? Rediculous. BBJ is my hero.
