Claim Scherzer or wait for Kershaw? (Dynasty league)

Post#1 » by The Rondo Show » Wed Apr 30, 2008 2:09 pm

I'm in a Yahoo Dynasty League with no prospect draft. You claim prospects as they enter Yahoo's system and I have the #1 waiver priority. Scherzer just got added...should I claim him or wait for Clayton Kershaw?

Are you in my dynasty league? If yes, then please do it. Now.

I might wait for Kershaw but do you know if Scherzer will be a starter or reliever?

I noticed him coming in relief.

Word is Scherzer's career will be in the pen as a top notch closer. That speculation was before he was Lincecum type dominant in the minors to start the year. Kershaw has been pretty dominant this year at AA as well. His biggest knock, his walk rate, is down drastically and he has a lower BAA this year as well. His K/9 is down slightly but it is still over 10/9IP and he just turned 20 a month ago so the kid is legit. The questions about Scherzer's stuff playing in the rotation as well as his ball park versus Kershaw's stuff, home ball park, age, and pedigree incline me to wait on Kershaw, who could be up by July. If you have the #1 priority, I would wait on the #1 prospect. mahalo

You think Kershaw will be called up though?

I have my doubts. I keep hearing how they dont want to rush him since hes only 20. But its gotta be hard not to call him up when hes mowing down batters in the minors.

Scherzer is getting his 1st start on Monday and considering the D-Backs other option right now is Edgar Gonzalez, I suspect he will remain a starter until he gives them reason to move him to the pen. Even if he does end up in the pen eventually, he should save 40 games for a team as good as the D-Backs with well over a K per inning and basically be just be lights out.

I like Kershaw more as a prospect, but I'm having a tough time deciding what to do. The D-Backs have a better offense than the Dodgers do so Scherzer is a better bet for wins as long as he's in the rotation and he can also help me right now.

Waiver priorities don't carry over to the next year either (it goes by standings--worst team gets #1, best team gets #18, etc.), so if Kershaw either misses time with injury or stumbles a bit as a 20 year old in AAA, the Dodgers may not call him up/he won't be added to Yahoo's system and I'll miss out on both. I find that unlikely, but it is a bit of an added risk that I have to consider.

Brandon Lyon is doing a great job (8 saves all ready) I can't see the DBacks making him a closer now.

Ya I agree. They should put him in the rotation for good.
