Manager A.J. Hinch said that closer Chad Qualls may continue to get called on for more than just the ninth inning.
"I agree . . . that the most important outs might be in that eighth inning and you have to be prepared to ask your closer to do that," Hinch said. "But I also understand that if you do that, it's going to cost you over the next couple days. At some point that's going to catch up to you." Qualls has made four appearances in the eighth inning this season, including two in the past week.

Well, if he's pitching good, then why not let him pitch more than one inning? I don't mind at all. It's not the traditional closers role, but it works.
