Johnson, Van Wieren, Carays on broadcaster honoree list

ATLANTA -- Now that TBS' groundbreaking run with the Braves has come to a close, it might be appropriate for this to be the year that Ernie Johnson Sr., Skip Caray or Pete Van Wieren are rewarded for being the men that brought baseball into countless living rooms on a nightly basis over the course of the past 30 years.

Beginning next season, the TBS baseball package will consist of postseason broadcasts and a weekly game of the week Sunday afternoons. No longer will the cable channel be strictly affiliated with the Braves, an organization that owes part of its national popularity to the fact that fans from Vermont to Hawaii spent a good portion of the past three decades enjoying the opportunity to watch Johnson, Caray and Van Wieren broadcast Braves games on their home televisions.

Johnson, Caray and Van Wieren are among those nominated for the 2008 Ford C. Frick Award, which recognizes excellence in baseball broadcasting. The winner will be enshrined alongside other broadcast legends in The National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Other Braves broadcasters on this year's ballot include Skip's son, Chip Caray, and Joe Simpson.
