Collateral damage
Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski thought he had filled his biggest need when he made a pre-emptive strike, trading two prospects for Atlanta shortstop Edgar Renteria on Monday that will facilitate Carlos Guillen's move from shortstop to first for Detroit. But then the phone rang and Dombrowski learned his best reliever, Joel Zumaya, would need surgery on his shoulder after boxes fell on him while he was helping his father evacuate his house during the California wildfires.
With closer Todd Jones eligible for free agency and possibly preparing to sign with the Braves, allowing him to move closer to his home in Alabama, the Tigers were looking at Zumaya as one of their three or four most important pitchers.
