Will the Braves be buyers at deadline ?

Post#1 » by Nemesis21 » Mon Jul 26, 2010 6:20 am

After the last few days/week, I think the Braves still need to get a bat in the outfield if they want to make serious run in playoffs. I am content with keeping a lefty/righty platoon in LF with Hinske and Diaz. And right field is set with Heyward. Melky and Nate just aren't cutting it.

Possible players to go after,

C Ross
Hart
Willingham
Bourn
Byrd

I'd really like to see the Braves get Byrd to play center. The Cubs season is pretty much over anyway.

Your thoughts ?

I expect us to make another move but for a lower grade talent. Corey Hart injuried his wrist and is scheduled to have an MRI tomorrow.

Here is an article about Cody Ross.

While Braves top scout Jim Fregosi is in Miami this weekend for the Marlins series, I'm back in Atlanta. Yes Fregosi has had a chance to watch Cody Ross over the course of the past few days.

But it appears the primary reason he remained near his residence in south Florida this week was to have the opportunity to talk with Bobby Cox and get a better understanding of what the Braves might need down the stretch.

There's a chance the Braves could land Ross if the Marlins reach a point where they aren't asking for much in return. But right now, it doesn't appear that they are showing definite interest in the 29-year-old center fielder, who has hit .167 with a .464 OPS this month. http://markbowman.mlblogs.com/archives/ ... -a_mi.html

We really need to add a power bat in the outfield. Entering this past weekend we had a 7 game lead in the division, currently(after Philly win today) that lead is now 4.5. Philly is looking to get another starting pitcher. I pray they don't land Oswalt.

IMO Marlon Byrd would be a great fit. Can play CF well, good clubhouse guy, strong arm, can hit for power. Problem is we don't know if Cubs will be sellers. Cubs are 10 games back in the Central.
I also think Byrd could come cheaper than Hart. I'd like somebody slightly on a higher level than C Ross, ie Byrd.

I like Byrd more than Hart as well. Plus he plays CF. I think our LF situation is good enough with Hinske/Diaz. The only problem with Byrd is they got him for a very reasonable price through 2012, and they may not be willing to part with their only good free agent signing in the past 4 years.

Jim Powell mentioned on his Twitter, "Rox lose 6 in row and #Ken_Rosenthal says Spilborghs might now be available. Wonder what the price tag is on him? Can play CF and hits LHP."

If they could get him in a reasonable deal, I would be all in for this. I really like Spilborghs as a player and think he could be a great addition to our OF. Plus, the Rockies have a massive overabundance of quality OFs, sucks that it seems they never want to deal them.

True. I'd take Spilborghs.
