Wish it happened when the were with the Braves. Still happy for them though.

Gattis' life story still chokes me up. That's gotta be a movie some day.

Bryce Harper declined Washington's offer. It didn't include any opt-outs and it wasn't the $400+ million that he's expecting to receive.
Cards, Phillies, San Fran, and Yankees are expected to pursue him. Scott Boras most likely drags this out.

I can't see the Yankees going hard after him. They have studs at RF and LF, and even though Harper's played a lot of CF... he's no CFer - simply does not have the range. And San Fran's not a place most hitters want to play. I could see him going to St L, and Philly's probably the favorite, and all the experts are saying the Braves won't go for a big-name free agent, but I still think they do make a run for Harper. Harper would be a big help to Freddie in the lineup.

Kudos to KSuz for getting paid for 2 more years. I bet the Nats thought he was about done when they let him go 5 years ago, but he just kept doing his professional job year in and year out. Still, it seems like a strange move to me by Washington. I figured they liked Spencer Kieboom - but as a backup. And at this stage (35), Suzuki's strictly a backup. So, they still need a starter. Are they thinking of re-signing Wieters - even after he was a disappointment for them his 2 years there? There does seem to be a major shortage of quality catchers in the majors.

He's not a starter, but still some pop in his bat. 31 HRs in 698 ABs for the Braves over the past two seasons.

Yanks trade their top prospect to Mariners for Paxton.

Yanks likely won't be in on Corbin anymore.

Yankees won this trade, they robbed Seattle. Only traded one of their top prospects, #1 and #21 for Paxton. At minimum Mariners should have got at least two top 10-15 prospects. Paxton has two years left on contract for very cheap.

Definitely a good trade for the Yankees, but I think Paxton's stats were helped by playing in Seattle, and he hasn't been the most durable pitcher in his career. Still, when you can get a lefty with his SO/W ratio, you do it.

According to Jon Morosi of MLB.com, the Twins and Diamondbacks "have had preliminary talks" about a Paul Goldschmidt trade.
Morosi adds, however, that "the dialogue has not advanced in recent days." Minnesota could certainly use help at first base -- Joe Mauer officially announced his retirement earlier this month -- but Goldschmidt is only under contract for one more season and the Twins need to upgrade many other parts of their roster if they want to seriously compete in 2019. The Cardinals and Astros have also been connected to the 31-year-old six-time National League All-Star.

Nats sign Corbin.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/12/nationals-to-sign-patrick-corbin.html

Scherzer, Corbin, Strausburg(when healthy). That's a big 3.

But I'll put up my 4 any day of the week.

Acuna
Albies
Freeman
Donaldson

Geebus, the Nats are really pushing it this offseason - gotta give it to them that they're a very well run organization. I like it, because that competition should force the Braves to make moves to improve. Already, the Nats have:

Traded for reliever Kyle Barraclough
Signed reliever Trevor Rosenthal
Signed old friend and catcher Kurt Suzuki
Traded for catcher Yan Gomes
Signed starter Patrick Corbin

We gotta be better than last year to hold off the Nats. And the Phillies and Mets are going to improve.

We have tons of pitching prospects and only 5 spots in the rotation. Time to go get Kluber and Haniger.
