Phillies get Oswalt, Braves need to respond ...

Post#1 » by Nemesis21 » Thu Jul 29, 2010 9:55 pm

With Phillies getting Oswalt, we can not stay with this team. If we want to compete, have to get an outfield bat. Glaus has fallen off, Chipper is not the same, A Gon power did not follow to ATL, Mac and Heyward are getting hot.

Word is we also need a reliever with O'Flarhty on DL, Chavez and Kawakami are garbage.

i think the Phillies are kind of out of the Bautista contest, at least I haven't heard anything since that tweet. I would love the Braves to make a run for Bautista. I heard the asking price is high, but I really like what he brings to the table offensively and would give us a replacement for Chipper next season.

In DOB's trade column today it mentioned Jacoby Ellsbury, who I think would make an amazing piece to this line-up. Not necessarily the power answer that everyone is looking for, but really think he could score a lot of runs with Prado, Heyward, Chipper and B-Mac hitting behind him.

I get the feeling that we might not too be too drastic, Troy Glaus is going to get hot again, hopefully for a few weeks here in August. So long as there isn't any bad damage to his knee that is causing him to change something in his swing.

Any chance we're the "one other" team?

Manny Ramirez(notes) was drawing interest from three teams – the Chicago White Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and one other – as Saturday’s trading deadline approached, sources said. Link

So we respond with Ankiel and Farnsworth . Traded Blanco, Chavez, and Tim Collins(from Jays trade)

Farnsworth is an upgrade over Chavez for this pen, but we could not do better than Ankiel ?

I question these moves and apparently so does the six people that sent me text messages. I had no clue until I received the text messages from people I know and I was expecting more. Oh well, I hope this team can continue to win.

^ Well to be fair, Farnsworth is a huge upgrade over Chavez. He has a 5 mill option for '11 , if Billy really does retire, Braves could pickup Farnsworth's option, have him close in '11 while Kimbrel gets another yr under his belt before becoming full time closer in '12.

Getting Ankiel is the questionable part. He is better defensively than Melky, but so is Nate. Nate just really hasn't had the power he had with Pirates . Ankiel has a better arm than Nate and Melky. And Ankiel has power(hit over 20 hr's in '05 or '06). Since coming of DL on July 22, Ankiel is hitting .367 11 for 30 with 1 hr 3 2b's and 6 rbi in 8 games.

And we got Kyle and Rick for next to nothing, Chavez was garabe, Blanco has been going back and forth from AAA to Atl last few yrs, and we have a lot of young arms in minors, so giving up Collins wasn't bad.

I like it. I never liked Chavez as he always stunk up the place every time out. How he struck out that man last night I'll never know. But when he cam in the game, you could always count on the other team getting hits and likely scoring. Glad he is gone. I am indifferent on Blanco and the prospect is just that. But I like Farnsworth coming over as it makes out already solid bullpen even better. Ankiel was hurt and just came back in July and was doing fine. He will help. Not the big bat I wanted, but he'll help. Bottom line is, they did improve the team so you have to be happy with that. Not a huge upgrade, but still an upgrade.

I really like the move, it's not anything fancy, but you can't convince me that Josh Willingham is THAT much better than Rick Ankiel that we would need to give up a big-name prospect for him. Considering we turned some scraps and a potential solid reliever (who knows if Collins can keep it up) into some key pieces for this season. I am very happy. I like that Ankiel can bring some much needed power into the bottom of the line-up (the kid can flat out mash) and Farnsworth was lights out (except for one pitch in the playoffs).

The Phillies may have a better offensive, but there is no way they are a better club from top to bottom then the Braves.
