Sources: Braves, Acuna finalizing $100M deal
Acuña was set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2024
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña and the team are finalizing an eight-year, $100 million contract extension, league sources tell ESPN.
The deal includes a $10 million buyout on two options that are worth $17 million each.
The new contract starts this year. He was making $560,000 this season.
The 21-year-old won the National League Rookie of the Year award last season batting .293 with 26 home runs and 64 RBIs.
Acuña will be the youngest player to ever receive a $100 million contract. The team now has him through his age-30 season.

I get the feeling this could be the first of many extensions for our young core. Figured it may be worthy of its own thread...

Biggest steal I've ever seen. So nice knowing Acuna is locked with us for years to come. Good job Braves. Now let's get some bullpen help.

Fabulous move by the Braves. It's a win/win. Acuna will likely be worth a lot more than he's paid throughout the entire contract - if he stays healthy. And he and his family get financial security for hundreds of years - so I can't feel too bad for him.

That's on me. I was making this the central thread for all extensions of our young core...only to find an existing thread for the Albies extension.

Well I started the Albies thread, because there was an Acuna thread. Someone mentioned he should have thread after extension. My bad.

Why the Braves’ rebuild is ahead of the Phillies
Both teams started their rebuilds in 2015 and yet Atlanta is well ahead of the Phillies right now
As the 2015 season approached both the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies decided it was officially time to start their rebuilding efforts.
Despite some decent moves and a lot of players walking out the door, the core of this Braves team did not come through trades. It came through signing and developing international players and draft picks. Atlanta isn’t perfect, but they’ve done well. But where the Braves have really outclassed the Phils in terms of star power is in the draft.
So yes, the Braves are ahead of the Phillies. There’s no question about that. Building a baseball team is not linear. Two teams can start at the same time and the timelines can look very different. But it’s clear Atlanta started from a stronger position, had better players to trade, and frankly, did a better job identifying and developing international signings and draft picks.

The Braves did this completely differently than most other teams would. Most teams delay letting their top prospects play, so they don't start their arbitration eligibility/free agency eligibility clocks earlier, but the Braves promoted these 2 as soon as they thought they were ready to help the ML team, and then the Braves signed them to longgg term contracts way before other teams would be even thinking about it. Now, they have maybe the 2 best contracts in baseball - and the most fun to watch top of the order in baseball. Acuna gets all the attention because he's a phenom, but Albies is also truly special. At 22, he has 161 career xbh's - that's incredible, 237 runs scored, 409 hits, and he's a 2nd basemen with range and an arm and 4 errors this season... in 152 games. And he's improving.
