Braves 2019 Draft Thread....

Post#1 » by Nemesis21 » Thu May 9, 2019 4:58 pm

The MLB draft is next month. The Braves have the 9th and 21st picks in round 1.

CBS Sports 2019 MLB mock has the Braves taking C Shea Langeliers Baylor and RHP Brennan Malone IMG Academy.

This mock I was looking at last week had the Braves taking Carter Stewart again, at 9 and 3b Brett Baty at 21. I think the mock site was called Through the Fence or something like that. I'll see if I can find it. Any of you think they would take Carter again? I remember being very excited for the Braves to draft him, before we found out about the wrist.

I think that bridge has been burned, and I heard he's not quite as highly regarded, so I'd pass. Maybe if he's there in the 2nd round - consider him there.

At 9, the 2 players that seem most interesting to me - just based on what I've read - are SS CJ Abrams and OFer Hunter Bishop.

Two weeks from today will be the draft, June 3rd.

If we could get Bishop/Langeliers and Malone, I would be ecstatic!!

And I think that any free agents (2 in particular) signed after that date don't require the signing team to give up draft picks. So maybe June 4th is also a big day for the Braves. :dontknow:

Carter Stewart has elected to pitch in Japan, instead of enter the 2019 draft.

That's weird. Well, him not signing has certainly made this year's draft a lot more interesting and potentially lucrative for the Braves.

Braves love big projectible high school pitchers, and it looks like the 2 best are Brennan Malone and then Quinn Priester. So, I'll predict they either use the 9th pick on Malone or the 21st pick on Priester. Priester at 21 seems more likely, because I think Hunter Bishop will be hard to pass up at 9. The question on him is he didn't do much until this year - sorta came out of nowhere. Has multiple 115+ MPH exit velocities - something only a handful of major leaguers have done, and yet he doesn't strike out a lot. And despite being 6'5 210 - has CFer speed - but just a LFer arm.

Yeah, if they get Malone with the 21st pick, that'll be a huge win for the Braves. He's exactly their type of pitcher.

I've seen 2-3 mocks with him there at 21, he was the Braves 21st pick in those mocks. With Bishop in 2 mocks to us at 9 and 1 with Langeliers.

There's a young guy local to me (in Maryland) that I swear by - he's really smart and dedicated to scouting. Here's a link to his scouting reports on the top prospects - if you're interested. http://www.orioleshangout.com/2019/05/28/mlb-draft-primer-2019-the-first-round/

Hell yeah, thanks! I love his upside comparison for Bishop, George Springer.

It's draft day!!

I'm still hoping our first round is,

9) Bishop/Langeliers

21) Brennan Malone

It's also kind of Free Agency day. Once the draft has started, teams won't have to give pick comp for signing Kuechel/Kimbrel. At 12:01am tonight, teams can sign them.

I'm happy with this. Wanted him or Bishop. Braves were high on both. * edit Bishop just went 10th to SF.

Hopefully Malone is there for us at 21.

I really wanted Brennan Malone here at 21. I doubt he'll be there at 60. :(

The Braves took another SS with their 3rd pick last night, pick 60 Beau Philip.

I really wish they took Malone at 21.

Agreed - maybe not picking Malone is a change in philosophy - probably not a good change. I don't know what the Braves' deal was with shortstops yesterday. Shewmake sounds like a good solid prospect - but a reach. They say he might out-grow the shortstop position and doesn't have a lot of power. Otoh, he might get stronger - he's 6'4 and maybe they're thinking he has upside. The second round SS... bizarre pick is the best I can say - particularly because they wouldn't consider signing Kimbrell because they wanted to hold onto that pick. Most experts didn't even have him as much of a prospect.

Seems like the Braves have focussed on defense. Hopefully the offense comes around for the 1st rounders. Seems like they wasted the 2nd rounder unless they know something nobody else knows.

I just think they wanted to stock pile on bats, college bats that could move thru system quickly, since we have pitching upon pitching.

Jonathan Mayo and Dan O'Dowd on MLB Network last night, said that they like Shewmake, and think the power will come. They also think he could be moved around the diamond. I would like to see him switch to 1b, he has the size. The Braves have no one in their system to replace Freddie when he retires down the road.

The kid we took at 60, both Mayo and O'Dowd thinks he moves to 2b, due to his size 6'0" 190 lbs.

They liked all 3 of the bats we took last night. We'll see.

It'll be fun to watch the future catcher job race between Contreas and Langeliers.

For sure, and maybe Contreras needed a push like this. They seem like similar type catchers - good to have 2 quality defensive catchers, and figure one or the other will become a good hitter. There's a real shortage of good catchers in MLB.
