Braves 2019 Trade Deadline Thread

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Wed Jul 31, 2019 12:46 pm

I'm no longer as aware of all things Braves and MLB since I moved away from the Peach State.

What is you guys take on this? My first thought is that giving up a 21 year old still under team control for a 33 year old approaching free agency is short sighted.

Am I wrong?

I don't hate the trade. Allard was our 7th best pitching prospect. He has fallen in our ranking two years in a row and was passed by other pitchers in the minors. His issues has always been a fastball that is 89-92 mph and having control of it.

Looking back Hart(Coppy wasn't fully promoted until October 2015, Wren fired in Dec 2014) should have took Walker Buehler at 14 instead of Allard. Buehler ended up going 24th to Dodgers.

Braves did good grabbing Soroka a little later. But man if we had Buehler with Soroka, Fried, the vets in Keuchel and Teheran, with Wright and Anderson in the wings. :o

Martin's a start - but he's not a fix. The thing I like about him is he doesn't walk people, but at 33, this is his first qualtiy season in the majors, and he's still hittable. He's having a real good season, but the Braves still need a closer. It was a fair trade. Allard's still a 21/22 year old lefty in AAA who throws a lot of innings - so he has value even if the shine is off him as a top prospect, and he was never going to get a shot in Atlanta. Another good thing about Martin - he's not just a rental - he's not eligible for free agency until 2024.

Get us a closer today - we need one.

I think this Martin cat can opt out in the Fall.

Mark Bowman wrote:Despite Martin having less than two years of service time, his contract allows him to become a free agent when his two-year deal expires at the end of the season. His status as a rental allowed the Braves to gain potential short-term value at the low cost of Allard, whose prospect value has drastically dropped since Atlanta took him with the 14th overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft.

I don't know - Baseballreference.com says he's not eligible for free agency till 2024. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/martich02.shtml If he's just a rental, I think the Braves over-paid, but maybe they had to.

I'd be happy with Greene.

So we're battling the Nats on and off the field today. :) Yeah, he's having a Great season - his best by far.

Update: Nats just acquired set-up man Daniel Hudson - solid but unspectacular veteran. Don't know if that effects their attempts at Greene - guessing it doesn't.

Update 2: Nats just traded for another solid vet set-up man - Roenis Elias. I think that knocks them out of the Greene sweepstakes. Apparently, the Tigers were asking the Nats for big-time prospect Carter Kieboom, so they may be asking for too much from the Braves.

Yeah I don't know if I want to give up a top 40 prospect for Greene either.

Sounds like we are getting Greene - that's huge! https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/07/braves-nearing-deal-for-shane-greene.html Don't know what we're giving up for him though. Article says he's controlled through 2020.

I honestly believe that without these 2 guys, Martin and Greene, the Braves season would have fallen apart. The Nats got 3 relievers, but Greene's clearly better than all of them, and I'd probably rate Martin slightly ahead of all 3. It's a good day to be a Braves fan.

I"m nervous to see what we gave up. Hopefully none of Pache, Waters, Anderson, Wright.

I'm like... Oh yeah, we gotta give something to get him. That could be a problem.

Just saw we also got Melancon. He's been nicked up the previous couple of years, but he looks like he's back in form, and he was good enough to be a closer when healthy. His stats look shakey, but I think he's a key get. Hopefully the Braves aren't on the hook for his whole salary.

Best case scenario - it's Alex Jackson and a so-so prospect.

The price wasn't cheap by any means, but it could have been worse: Joey Wentz and Travis Demerritte. I'm guessing Travis will be starting for the Tigers soon - this is a big break for him. Congrats to him.

I love Alex Anthopoulos!! Didn't give up any of the big guns. I'm totally fine with Wentz and Demeritte for Greene! :D

I'm also good with Beck and Winkler for Melancon.

And Beck really shouldn't be rated that highly, imo.

We got a decent bullpen - yeah!!! It's not dominant by any stretch, but I really believe the team was going to break if they didn't make these moves.

I like the trades we made today a lot. The goal is to win the World Series and I believe these moves put us in a better position to do so.
Now, everyone must perform, and so their part to achieve success.

Shane Greene being on the final year of his contract doesn't concern me. I expect him to be extended this off-season as long as he performs well.

That's tough - and on his birthday. I'm sure a bunch of teams would like to have him - assuming his health prognosis is good.

Hey, when you get 3 new players on a team with Atlanta's depth, someone has to go.
