2020 MLB Draft

Post#1 » by Ruzious » Thu Jun 11, 2020 11:37 am

So the Braves went with a college pitcher named Shuster with the 25th pick. This looks to me like a classic under-slot pick made in large part to save money so that they can afford an over-slot pick or picks later in the draft - perhaps this will show with their 2nd round pick. Every mock that I saw had him going lower - though some just a couple picks later. He appears to be a late bloomer. While he always had very good SO rates, he also gave up a lot of hits and walks and runs in 2018 and 2019. But he dominated in the Cape Cod League, and supposedly his fastball velocity jumped from 90 to 97, so I see some logic in this pick. And if they do use that under-slot advantage by getting a higher rated prospect in round 2, I'll be happy. Otoh, if they make an obscure pick in round 2, I'll be a bit disappointed. But what do I know?

Don't really like this pick at the moment. This kid posted an ERA over 6.00 two of the seasons he was at Wake Forest. I was wanting Cole Wilcox or Jared Kelly, both are still available.

Shoot, I just saw the Braves lost their 2nd round pick for signing Will Smith - forgot about that. They pick next in the 3rd round with the 97th overall pick. Hopefully they get a high ceiling'd HSer there. Kelly will be long gone, but maybe Dax Fulton or Carson Montgomery will be there? Yeah, Wilcox would have made sense for them in the 1st round. He's from Georgia, and he should be an easy sign.

Marlins took Dax Fulton at 40.

With the 97th pick the Braves take a college bat, Michigan OF Jesse Franklin V, 6'1 215 lbs. MLB Network Dan O'dowd player compared Franklin to Brett Gardener.

Getting a big CFer who can mash sounds good to me, and gotta like that he produced fairly well for a big school.
