I grew up a Braves fan, and my brother grew up an Astros fan, so we'd razz each other about the Niekro brothers. They had 539 wins between them - just amazing. Unfortunately, neither me or my brother could figure out how to throw a knuckleball. Thank you Phil, and RIP.

LF options per mlbtraderumors.com:

The Braves are looking for a left fielder, per MLB Insider Jon Morosi (via Twitter). Presumably, Atlanta would target a short-term investment rather than making a splashier move like, say, bringing back Marcell Ozuna. Ronald Acuna Jr., Ender Inciarte, and Cristian Pache make for an elite defensive alignment, and prospect Drew Waters is on his way. Nick Markakis could certainly find his way back if he wants to keep playing. If their aim is to to find a right-handed bat to spell Inciarte against southpaws, Adam Duvall could return, or Kevin Pillar, Albert Almora Jr. and Cameron Maybin are free agents with experience playing for a contender. If the Braves are looking for a more regular producer in order to give Pache and/or Waters more development time, Joc Pederson could fill the power void left by Ozuna’s departure. Speculatively speaking, Ryan Braun would make for an interesting fit if he decides to play outside Milwaukee. Not to be forgotten, Austin Riley has played some outfield during his short Major League career, but Atlanta expects Riley to lay claim to the hot corner in 2021. That would change if they were to add DJ LeMahieu, but despite their reported interest, such a union seems like a long shot.

Plech, just re-sign Ozuna and play him in LF. Don't use him at all in RF - he was horrible there, but they can get by with him in LF. And maybe next year, the NL gets the DH back.

I loved listening to Don Sutton on TBS back in the day when I could watch pretty much every Braves game - and the team was great every year. Sutton was clearly the dominant guy on those broadcasts and had a wealth of knowledge and a nice easygoing style. He was great. RIP Don Sutton.

According to FanSided's Robert Murray, the Braves are "circling" on free agent catcher J.T. Realmuto.

Murray adds that "other teams on the west coast" are also expressing interest. Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported Wednesday that the Phillies are "believed" to have an offer on the table to Realmuto worth upwards of $110 million, but the 29-year-old catcher is probably aiming a little higher than that after watching 31-year-old outfielder George Springer sign a six-year, $150 million contract with the Blue Jays on Tuesday. Travis d'Arnaud currently projects as the starting catcher in Atlanta for 2021, coming off a terrific showing in 2020.

Hector Gomez of Deportivo Z 101 in the Dominican Republic reports that Marcell Ozuna is seeking a four-plus year contract and has drawn interest from the Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, Mets, Twins and Brewers.

Noticeably absent from that list of teams is the Braves, a club that was the beneficiary of Ozuna's monster 2020 season which saw him post a .338/.431/.636 batting line with 18 home runs and 56 RBI over 60 games. For what it's worth Braves president Alex Anthopoulos said early in the offseason that the team would "love" to re-sign Ozuna. That was three months ago, though. The general consensus is that Ozuna is more of a designated hitter at this point in his career, but it would seem he's drawing interest from clubs in both leagues.

Oh well - seems clear that the Braves aren't willing to pay up and keep him.

In a small move, I think the Braves stole a good reliever from the Phillies - which is kinda surprising, because the Phillies pen stunk. They claimed Victor Arano after the Phils put him on waivers. Just 25/26 and he has excellent stats in his short time in the majors. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=arano-000vic
https://www.philliesnation.com/2020/09/what-happened-to-victor-arano/

Braves also claimed an OFer from the Phillies named Kyle Garlick - sounds like an ordinary journeyman type.

A fun article on what players have the top tools in the minors. Pache is regarded as the top defensive prospect in baseball.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Braves have agreed to a four-year, $65 million contract to bring back outfielder Marcell Ozuna.

Hector Gomez was the first to report that the two sides were close to reaching a multi-year contract. The deal also includes a $15 million option for a fifth season. Ozuna was a force in the middle of the Braves lineup in 2020, slashing a monstrous .338/.431/.636 with a league-leading 18 homers and 56 RBI -- finishing sixth in the voting for National League MVP. His return solidifies a Braves lineup that should once again be near the top of the league in offensive output.

Wow - great news! It sure sounded like he was gone. Maybe the DH comes to the NL in 2022? I think he can be adequate in LF; just not in RF, and since Acuna will be in RF - assuming Pache starts in CF - it works out - and now the Braves can give Waters some more time to learn in AAA. He was arguably the best hitter in baseball last year, and his value extends to protecting Freddie and the others in the lineup. Gotta be competitive with the Dodgers - who are getting Bauer.

He can play a lot of positions, and he can run. He's probably best off in the NL where he can pinch-hit more. I hope he makes good.
