Nationals @ Braves 6/25, 6/26, 6/27
Monday, June 25 Turner Field | 7:05 PM ET
Jason Bergmann, RHP (1-3, 2.76) Nationals (32-43)
@ Tim Hudson, RHP (6-5, 3.43) Braves (38-38 )
Scouting Report:
Nationals: Bergmann (sore right elbow) had his final rehab start for Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday night. He pitched four innings and gave up a run on three hits against Rochester. Bergman threw 58 pitches, 34 for strikes. He will be activated from the disabled list next week and pitch against the Braves on Monday in Atlanta.
Braves: Hudson's tough luck against Boston continued in his last start, when he took the loss to drop to 3-9 lifetime against the Red Sox. In that start, Hudson cruised through three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth and left with one out in the sixth after allowing four runs and nine hits. But Hudson is done with Boston, and American League teams, until next season. Instead, he'll face a team against whom he's had much more success. In his career against Washington and Montreal, Hudson is 3-1 in six starts with a 1.30 ERA. Before his outing against Boston, Hudson had left his previous two starts with injuries. He made it through the Red Sox start without incident, and with his health no longer a concern, Hudson can focus on regaining the form that allowed him to start the season 5-1.
Tuesday, June 26 Turner Field | 7:35 PM ET
Mike Bacsik, LHP (1-4, 4.70) Nationals (32-43)
@ Buddy Carlyle, RHP (1-2, 6.11) Braves (38-38 )
Scouting Report:
Nationals: Bacsik will face the Braves for the second time in his career. He pitched two innings without yielding a run. On Wednesday, Bacsik kept the Nats in the game over the first five innings, giving up three runs on six hits against the Tigers. When he left the game, the two teams were locked in a 3-3 tie. But the bullpen blew the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Braves: On Wednesday against the Red Sox, Carlyle was roughed for the first time since his big-league debut on May 26. He gave up a leadoff home run to J.D. Drew, and things only got worse from there. He lasted 3 2/3 innings -- his shortest start this season -- and allowed seven runs on nine hits, including three home runs, which matched his previous season total. Carlyle was hurt by leaving his offspeed pitches up in the strike zone, a problem that allowed Coco Crisp to touch him for a three-run homer in a five-run first inning. Since a one-hit outing against Florida on June 5, Carlyle has allowed 22 hits in 16 innings over his past three starts.
Wednesday, June 27 Turner Field | 7:35 PM ET
Micah Bowie, LHP (4-2, 3.63) Nationals (32-43)
@ John Smoltz, RHP (8-4, 3.14) Braves (38-38 )
Scouting Report:
Nationals: In his last start, Bowie lasted only 4 1/3 innings, though he yielded only one run against the Indians. By the time he left the game with the score tied at 1, Bowie had thrown 104 pitches, 58 for strikes. Bowie's fastball wasn't effective, and he acknowledged that he was trying to strike people out to help him get out of the inning. He ended up with a season-high seven strikeouts in the game.
Braves: Smoltz became the Atlanta Braves' all-time strikeout leader when he picked up No. 2,856 in the first inning against Detroit on Friday, but that was about the end of the good news. Smoltz allowed five runs in the sixth frame, with the potential for a big inning lingering after Smoltz labored through the fourth and fifth. It was the second time he allowed more than three earned runs in a start this season and the first since April 22, when he allowed six in a loss to the Mets. Smoltz was hitting corners as he cruised through the first three innings, but in the sixth he started leaving pitches over the middle of the plate and the Tigers made him pay by collecting six hits, including two doubles. Smoltz exited after the sixth with seven Ks, one short of his season-high and a total he has matched in three of his past six outings.
Im going to go out on a limb here and say tonight is when we break out of our hitting slump Im expecting to come out and get a few runs right out of the gate tonight.

Granted its the Nationals, but two wins is two wins none the less. I was once again impressed by Buddy Carlyle tonight in his seven innings. He doesn't have great stuff, but he attacks hitters and works quickly through an order.
And as it has been said previously, when will Bobby Cox hand the first base duties over the Salty for good?
