GLAVINE: 1 MORE YEAR

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Tue Sep 11, 2007 4:55 pm

"I'm having as much fun as I've had in a long time, and that's a big factor for me,'' Glavine told The Post on Sunday night. "It's a fun team to come to the ballpark with every day. All the factors are there [to coming back].''

Glavine, 41, returning for one more season is testimony to his competitive nature as much as anything. The lefty is a deep thinker who has gone over every possible scenario and, at this point, only an injury would derail him from coming back in 2008.

It's likely Glavine will decline his option with the Mets and sign a new contract with the club for 2008 in the $12 million range. There's always the chance the Braves, who were beaten 3-2 by the Mets last night at Shea, could go after Glavine again, but Atlanta has not come up with the money in the past, and that is not expected to change. Glavine's offseason home is in Georgia, but Glavine has found a new home in New York, and next year would be his sixth season with the Mets.

I think he'll stay with the Mets. Like the article states, we probably won't offer him the money that he wants, plus, he's doing well there now so the Mets are probably his first choice.

Why? Because he was with the enemy? He's still good for 13-15 wins and <3.50 ERA. He's a solid #3 starter. If you guys had signed him last year, you could have shifted the balance of power in the division.

BRAVES BLEW CHANCE TO BRING GLAVINE BACK

He all but begged the Braves to return him to Atlanta to win his 300th game in his most familiar uniform and to be near his family. As his pal, Billy Wagner, said, "I know for a fact that he would have taken less money to play down there."

The Braves, however, pretty much shunned Glavine, telling him they did not have enough money to make an offer. So Glavine accepted his second choice, to stay a Met for $10.5 million.

"It did have a big ripple effect," Glavine said.

He had the chance to take less money.
