Scouting Report:

Braves: In the four starts Hudson has made since winning nine straight decisions, he's 0-3 with a 6.65 ERA. He's surrendered nine homers this season, and four of them have come in the 18 innings he's completed during his past three starts. He is 3-0 with an 0.86 ERA in three starts against the Nationals this year.

Nationals: Hill scattered two runs (one earned) over six innings to beat the Marlins his last time out. It was the right-hander's first win since May 11. He allowed six hits, struck out four and didn't walk a batter. Hill has allowed three earned runs or fewer in all but one of his starts this season. He has never faced the Braves.

The Braves need to take advantage of having Tim Hudson on the mound today. They need to finish off the Nationals today to win the series and hope the Phillies beat the Mets.

WASHINGTON -- While thinking of what he could grab to commemorate his memories of RFK Stadium, Tim Hudson playfully said he might attempt to gather one of those large rats that inhabit the old structure.
Fortunately for his family, Hudson won't be bringing any of those cat-sized rodents home with him. But with the shutout he contributed while helping the Braves claim a 3-0 win over the Nationals on Sunday afternoon, he at least created one reason to remember this decaying landmark with some sense of fondness.

Hudson's 10th career shutout marked the first complete game for a Braves pitcher this year. It also marked the first win in five starts for the veteran right-hander, who is now 5-1 with a 1.09 ERA in eight career starts against the Nationals/Expos. With the Nationals moving into their new stadium next season, this was the last experience at RFK for the Braves, who gained an early lead during a two-run first inning that was sparked by Hudson's leadoff infield single. After Edgar Renteria and Chipper Jones drew consecutive one-out walks, Mark Teixeira punished Washington starter Shawn Hill with a two-run single through the right side of the infield.

The two runs were plenty for Hudson, who scattered seven hits and definitely got better as the afternoon progressed. After surrendering consecutive one-out singles in the first inning, he registered consecutive strikeouts of Austin Kearns and Ryan Church. The leadoff singles he surrendered in both the second and fifth innings were both nullified by double-play groundouts.

Hudson, who had carried two other shutout attempts into the ninth inning this year, also added a sixth-inning double to give him his fourth two-hit performance of the season. During his past 14 starts, the athletic hurler has managed to compile a .351 (13-for-37) batting average.
