Smoltz to join TBS for playoffs

October’s winningest pitcher will be back in the postseason in the broadcast booth. TBS invited John Smoltz to join their broadcast team for Division Series play.
“It’s a great opportunity,” Smoltz said. “I love that first do-or-die series.”
Smoltz has done some pregame and postgame analysis for Braves games on Fox this season and teamed with Joe Simpson for a game on WPCH. He also did some in-studio analysis for TBS last year during the playoffs.
Because Smoltz, who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery, aims to pitch next season, he could be analyzing games against teams he’ll face next year, like the Phillies or Mets.
“I’m just going to approach it like an ongoing interview,” Smoltz said. “I’m not afraid to make mistakes. I’m not afraid to talk about the game [while] I hope to continue it. I would try to be at a level where you’re removed from the game, but you’re trying to bring insight.”
He has thought about the possibility of calling a game with Greg Maddux pitching for the Dodgers.
“That would be very interesting,” Smoltz said.
Smoltz will be in a three-man booth, though pairings haven’t been determined. He could be paired with Simpson, though TBS does not plan to pair him with Chip Caray.
“We’re thrilled for John,” said Caray, who thinks Smoltz has shown a natural knack for live broadcasting. “When that red light comes on, you can either do it or you can’t. There’s no doubt in my mind he’s going to be great.”
