trade idea

Post#1 » by theatlfan » Wed Dec 9, 2009 4:52 am

the leadup
we've been trying to trade lowe all offseason. now that lackey and other lesser fa pitchers have put their asking price out there, lowe's 3 yr/45 mil contract doesn't look nearly as bad as it did just a few weeks ago.

also, soriano accepted arbitration and now we're looking to trade him. soriano is an accomplished back of the bullpen guy, so i'd think any team would be interested at the right price.

obviously, we've been looking for a rh bat and some payroll flexibility to get for a first baseman or an upgrade anywhere

the proposal
lowe, soriano, and kelly johnson to baltimore for nolan reimold and 2 minor leaguers, josh bell and xavier avery.

for us is obvious. we drop the 2 pitchers and position player we've been rumored to move while getting back 2 holes we've been looking to address, a ml ready rh bat who can be a middle of the order run producer and a 3b who's a year or 2 away. avery is just a local kid in the low minors. at this rate, i wouldn't mind pitching in half of lowe's salary in year one if it gets the deal done.

for balt, i like the parts, but am wondering the price. they've got a very young team especially their starting pitching staff. getting an inning eater and a closer would go a long way to helping the team 'learn to win'. johnson has some value as a flier type who's shown flashes with the bat and could fill in between 2b, 3b, and lf.

my questions
would lowe fit in at camden yards
would balt take on lowe's contract after ridding themselves of some high priced vets this year
would balt part with reimold and more for some temporary fill in to help their kids along
would lowe and soriano accept being sent to balt

I don't think that nets us the experienced power we're looking for in return.

I know you posted this before, but Soriano is now heading to Tampa for peanuts anyway.

Good job Wren!
