What if we let Lowell walk, don't sign A-Rod...but instead make a push for Miguel Cabrera.
He'd make for a DEVASTATING #5 hitter behind David Ortiz (slide Manny to the 3 for a righty-lefty-righty combo)
91 runs, 38 2B, 34 HR, 119 RBI, .320 BA, .966 OPS...all due respect to Mike Lowell, but I think that was a contract year display, while this type of production could be expected for years to come from Miguel Cabrera (and they'd VASTLY improve in the Red Sox offense vs. the Marlins.)
He'd also provide us some insurance in case Manny leaves after next season (whether by his choice or if we show him the door.)
Anyways, what would you guys think of an offer of Lester, Coco, and another upper level prospect.
Enough? Too much?

That's a good starting point. Now add Buchholz and Pedroia and the Marlins might bite.
Stay away from Cabrera until free agency. He's destined for LF/DH anyway.

He's destined to find Faneuil Hall Marketplace and eat himself out of the league.

ya, i could see him standing at the sausage carts before, during, and after the game just eating on after the other and pushing fans to the side in a blind rage of pepper and oniony goodness
Fixed.
I'm not giving up half the farm system for Cabrera. I love him and all but I think this year's team is showing that you need a line-up 1-9 that can hit. Just having two-three outstanding hitters in the middle of a line-up that prides itself of being patient and drawing walks is going to continue to struggle unless the entire batting order can hit. You stand to have that chance by not trading for Miggy. Ellsbury will hit better than Coco and if you can eventually find a replacement for Varitek, you've got your stacked line-up again. All the pieces it would take to get Cabrera can fill in the rest of the holes (through the players themselves or separate trades) and make this team disgusting. mahalo

how about A-Rod at third, and Lowell in left. if we don't win championships, we can watch the greatest hitter of all time break every record in the book.
better still, A-Rod at short, Lowell at third and Manny in left--any murderer's row in mlb history greater tban that.

Listen pal, when you say silly **** like Manny is a good defensive outfielder, you are just BEGGING to go into my sig. Just as a warning for the future.
You apparently don't have enough time on your hands because I've got FAR more funny and ghey comments floating around RealGM. Unfortunately, a lot of them have been archived so you are SOL. mahalo

I've seen some crazy **** written on here, but wow.
There really is no doubt that Manny is the worst fielder in baseball, assuming Ryan Braun moves to a corner OF position sometime soon.

That is a horrible stat to use to judge a fielder. There is no definitive stat, like OPS, for fielding. You need to look at all the stats combined. In terms of range factor, he was 15th out of 17 who qualified (1.72) and and dead last in zone rating at .713. Range factor is putouts plus assists divided by innings so what that measures is the actual number of outs Manny makes. Zone rating is a measure of how many balls a player gets into in his "zone" and it's a stat measured by Stats Inc (so it's impartial, everyone is held to the same standard).
So what picture is painted? Well he has a good fielding percentage so when the ball is hit right at him, he is reliable enough to make an out (contrary to what perception may be). However, his range factor is very bad because he really doesn't make that many outs a game, which you could argue that the Monster is partly responsible for because potential outs become hits. EXCEPT that his zone rating is horrendous, suggesting his range is horrible and those balls off the monster would be hits anyway. To put it in perspective, the next closest defender is Raul Ibanez who has a .761 range factor. That is a pretty big gap to second to last place.
So the positives for Manny: he fields balls hit right at him and he has quick release which has held maybe a dozen would be doubles to singles at Fenway by getting the ball back in quick.
The negatives: he doesn't make many outs, especially relative to his position peers, and he has the worst range in LF so if he played at a neutral field (without the Monster), he would be horrendous. And anecdotally, we know he takes horrible routes to balls sometimes, doesn't hustle all the time (letting balls drop in front of him) and has his airhead moments a few times a season. All things combined, he' still horrible. mahalo

i really want the Sox to re-sign Lowell and NOT sign A-Rod. if we signed A-Rod, we would really be turning into the Yankeses. be consistent and stick with Lowell, he's always dependable at the plate, and his glove is amazing. a consummate preofessional who also performs in the postseason, unlike A-Rod.

we could re-sign lowell for 3rd and then sign arod and move him to SS. we could put arod in the 7 spot then you've got a batting order of pedroia, youk, papi, manny, graybeard, drew, arod, tek and jacoby.
lol

Lets say that Mike Lowell ends up walking and goes to another team. Lets also say that Alex Rodriguez becomes the Cubs next third baseman. I'm just assuming Arod days at SS are over, although I know it's still possible. I'm really just dealing with whatif's, which really is what the offseason is all about.
