Jermaine Dye changing his Sox?

Post#1 » by The Rondo Show » Sat Jul 28, 2007 2:11 pm

According to Rosenthal, a 3-way deal that would send Dye to the Red Sox fell through last night. Dye said the Red Sox assured him he'd play 5 times a week with Boston which was good enough for Dye. The unknown 3rd team backed out of the deal to stop anything from getting done right away, but Rosenthal says the Red Sox are still working on getting a deal done.

I'd like to add Dye, for the right price. That means Buchholz and Ellsbury are both clearly off limits in my eyes and I'd have a hard time parting with Bowden, Masterson, Lowrie or Lars...but probably would part with one of them and/or Wily Mo in the end. Dye has been a lot like the Jermaine Dye of last year since the AS break (1.100 OPS--though, he definitely will not be THIS good...he should be considerably better than he has been so far this year) and will bring the Red Sox back two picks in the off-season if they only want him as a rental.

Drew would likely play center against most righties, sit against all lefties, play right field once or twice a week with Dye getting a rest. Coco would probably get squeezed of some playing time, but still should get about 3-4 starts a week and play a role in every game or almost every game as at least a pinch runner and defensive replacement.

Overall, it certainly isn't a move they "need" to make but I wouldn't mind seeing it happen. Thoughts?

Better then Pena, but would Dye been happy being a backup OF?
