Julio Lugo so far

Ok, with all the hype around Dice-K and the satisfaction with the Red Sox start to the season, one player mostly gets overlooked even though he also was on the list of high priced offseason aquisitions: Julio Lugo.
He has hit 2 homers, 23 RBIs and he has already stolen 12 bases. While his average and his OBP% could be better, I think we can still be happy with his offensive production. He can get runners in and he can make something happen on the bases. I don't have his pitches per plate appearance rate but I think he's fine there too.
His offense was never really the question with him I guess and his defense has been shaky at best so far. I think though that he's a perfect fit for our team and considering we have mainly flyball pitchers on the staff anyways, I wouldn't really consider his D a problem. He truly gives us a bat in the order which helps us to score with the big time offenses like New York or Toronto and this certainly can't be overlooked by evaluating Lugo...

He's been pretty terrible so far, but I expect he'll do significantly better as the season wears on. He's not going to hit .258/.321/.371 over a full season. I expect something like .300/.350/.430, which would be excellent.
I don't like him as a leadoff hitter at all, though.

Yeah his averages so far truly suck but as you said, he will come around. His base stealing though looks good and he can drive in some runs which is a plus from the shortstop position in comparison to last year.

Lugo has never had a .300+ average to my recollection.. his carrer average is somewere between .270-.280 i believe.. he isn't a guy who hits for high averages

He hit .295 in 2005 and .308 in half a season in Tampa last year.

I don't care about 2005 or a half year.... historically, he isn't near .300, which in my opinon you want a leadoff hitter to have for an average

Average is pretty useless to judge how well Lugo is doing. He needs to pick up his OBP. I don't care how he gets on base, he just needs to do it at a better clip.

.224/.287/.327
Where is Alex Cora? It's June and Lugo has a 614 OPS.

And really the worst part about signing Julio Lugo is that he took your first round pick away in a LOADED, LOADED 2007 MLB Draft.

Not really. While it is nice to have an awesome minor league system, the MLB team is far more important.
The Red Sox will still have 2 supp. 1st rounders from Gonzalez and Foulke (LOL! Thanks Keith...) and have actually had more success drafting there or later than in the regular 1st round recently. They'll get some good to great prospects this draft and with no 1st rounder they can always use that 1st round money to pick a guy who falls due to signability issues (see: Lars Anderson '06) and give them the 1st round money they want.
The worst part is that Lugo sucks at baseball right now, is posting an OBP well below .300, is average to slightly above average (considering position) when he is playing like he usually does and he gets a 4 year, $36M deal out of it.

a .225 average a .290 OBP, mediocre defense... just complete crap, i don't care if he is 18/18 in steals or has 33 RBI, the guy sucks

I thought he's been good defensively not sure if the numbers back it up tho. He needs to be moved lower in the order and see if he can pick it up that way.

Like 8th? And have Peds bat leadoff?

8th seems like the logical choice. But then you have Lugo and Crisp going back to back...and that's not pretty either.

So Lugo cost the Red Sox Rick Porcello and a perfect game.
