I don't see any reason why they need to extend him now. I just don't understand what is the reason for it right now.

I'd wait, but locking him up for $13 million right now is pretty tempting.

I'd absolutley do it. 13 million for a full season of shilling is better then 28 million for 2/3rds a season of clemens. I know those wouldn't be the sox's only options but god damn that makes it look like a steal.

Agreed, and I think its the best option. Schill loves Boston and you know he can handle the pressure. We're not looking to add another pitcher long term anyways, we're pretty stocked with front of the rotation guys already. I think Clay is projected to come up in 08, but maybe someone can correct me on that. With a few young guys in the rotation it would be nice to have Schill around for a year to stabilize things for them and to help them out. It seems he welcomes the mentor type role with younger guys.

I mean thats pretty sick. I know Wake is the odd man out, and I hate to see that happen because he's such an icon, but I don't know where to put him (unless Clay waits until 09).

If Gil Meche got $12MM/yr from the Royals last season locking up that fatass, no matter how old and LAIM-y he becomes, for $13MM isn't a bad option.

Most of the guys don't come nearly as close as Schilling in my eyes. The onl guy i would be excited about would be Carlos Zambrano. He could have a better career than Schilling.

I'm not saying they shouldn't try and bring Schill back. I just don't understand the point right now. He died down the stretch last year, what if he's worse this season? What if he gets hurt...he is 40+. Just give it to him in the offseason.

Has anyone else paid attention to him this season? And how wildly inconsistent he is? And you want to lock him up NOW? No, that offer will still be there come October because no team is going to wildly over spend for a 40 plus inconsisent pitcher. Being a prospect lover, I think Buchholz would be a better choice as the #5 starter: Beckett/Matsuzaka/Wakefield/Lester/Buchholz with a number of guys at AAA as #6. That being said, there is a better than average chance that Buchholz isn't ready for major league action next season, in which case, I'd be all for bringing Schilling back. But there is no reason to tie your hands now when you will have more data at the end of the year. Has Schill's poor pitching been back luck or is his stuff slipping? How is it going to be from today until the end of the season? The reason for not extending him last offseason and Spring Training was to wait and see how he performed this year and that is the correct course. mahalo

I personally think Buehrle would be a great fit for the Red Sox. Put him in between 2 power right handed pitchers Beckett, and Dice-K. That would be a great SP combo.

Yeah he will probably miss atleast his next start even if the mri comes up clean. He might need a mental health day.

Its not like Shilling has been lights out this year, or the second half of last year. And how are you going a judge a pitcher based on half a year. Beckett stunk most of last year, what would've happened if the Red Sox would have just gave up on him?

I think Buerhle would be a great fit because instead of having 3 right handed power pitcher at the top, have a lefty finesse pitcher to throw off the hitters.

Lester should fill that role.

If Schill does miss a start, do you think it will be Hansack, Gabbard or Lester who gets the call? I'm not sure what the rotation is like down in AAA.

OT- This is Matt Clement's last year

If Schill is out for a start, bring Gabbard up for a spot start. If Schill goes on the DL, bring in Lester and don't send him down after that.
