Unretired retired numbers

The following players numbers have yet to be retired, even though they were the last ones to wear it.
5 -- Nomar Garciaparra
14 -- Jim Rice
21 -- Roger Clemens
42 and Mo Vaughn doesn't count because major league baseball had already retired it all across in honor of Jackie Robinson.
Now do you think that the organization will ever formally retire their numbers? In Nomar's case, he left on a rather sour note, so probably not. In Rice's case, he has to make the HOF, right? And as for Clemens, that depends on what hat he will wear when he is inducted into the hall-of-fame. It'll probably be with the Bombers, although Clemens has seemingly gotten less bitter about his "divorce" in '96 with us with every passing year.
I wonder if you HAVE to be a hall of famer in order to have your number retired. There are a lot of intelligent baseball posters here, so I'll leave that up to you.

From the Sox home page:
The Red Sox policy on retiring uniform numbers is based on the following criteria:

The question now becomes whether they waive the ten-year requirement for Petey.

So Nomar doesn't qualify... too bad. But they've probably retired it, in an unofficial manner, out of respect. Even though he doesn't deserve it.
Jim Rice just has to make the HOF. He is bound to at some point.
The biggest ? mark is Clemens, IMO. That'll be the most deserving of three, yet the most controversial one as well.

Oh yeah Pedro is another one, he's in the same boat as Nomar

Except that Pedro has possibly the best stretch of pitching in the history of baseball during his stint with the club. Nomar was just a very, very good SS.

I was at the 17 K 1 run performance game against the Devil Rays. Fantastic. What sucked is the fact that we scored 0 runs that game. Jimy Williams, you f-ng moron. Why did you start f-ng Andy Sheets over Nomar?

It's all about overpaying for marginal upgrades according the the baseball gurus in this forum. No one stays with a team for 10 years anymore. They are going to have to banish that rule.

Clemens and Pedro will be retired. The others? Nah. Nomar isn't going to sniff the Hall now that he's basically washed up as a 1B with no power.
Jim Rice will not make the Hall of Fame. And if he does, I'm going to cry for Dwight Evans' sake.

Yep, I have the feeling they will make the exception with pedro.
Clemens, probably. I hope the retire it.
Probably not nomar.
Jim Rice, ya never know. I am tired of getting hopes up though, that he will get in, and every year he is on the pre game show after the decision was made, and ya just feel bad for the guy.
Cool discussion though. Who are others that deserve to be brought up in discussions. I swear awhile ago I read on Bostondirtdogs, that they were set to retire Conigliaro. Maybe I misread it, and it was an oppinion thread.

Nope; it's all about getting one's uniform dirty and TEH 25!!!
Clemens... a must!

I would have to say Clemens has to be on the list... Period. 7 Cy Young awards (2 more than anyone else has) and has dominated the pitching world through the 80's, 90's, and now the 2000's. Incredible!
I would have to say that it's a bit funny that he started with the Bo Sox and might be ending at the Yank's.
I would have to say that as soon as Rice hits the HOF, done.
Great discussion though...

I'd like to see the Sox put Pesky's number up there. He's been with the Red Sox for so long. I know the numbers don't back it up, but I think he deserves it.

They officially named the pole after him, though. That (i.e. having something named after you) is one of the highest honors a non-HoFer can receive here, it seems.
