10 Guys the Sox Could Look At Close to the Trade Deadline

Roy Oswalt
Position: Starter
Team: Houston Astros
He told the Houston Chronicle last week he would likely waive a no-trade clause if the Astros decided to move him. The Sox tried to get him last trading deadline. This one is a long shot.
Dontrelle Willis
Position: Left-handed starter
Team: Florida Marlins
No sign yet that the Marlins are willing to deal him. The Sox would be a player for him if he were out there.
Eric Gagne
Position: Closer/Set-up
Team: Texas Rangers
Not sure he would want to be a right-handed set-up man, but the Sox would have to consider him.
Ken Griffey Jr.
Position: Outfield
Team: Cincinnati Reds
Only if David Ortiz's knee injury got any worse. And then, would Griffey OK a deal to Boston?
Dave Roberts
Position: Outfield
Team: San Francisco Giants
With two years remaining on his contract, unlikely, but why not try to steal another moment off the bench?
Jarrod Saltalamacchia
Position: Catcher/First base
Team: Atlanta Braves
Line up for this guy. Everybody wants him. The Sox desperately need a young catcher. This is the guy.
Mark Teixeira
Position: First base
Team: Texas Rangers
They like him. He likes them. But you'd have to do something drastic -- like exit Mike Lowell -- to make it happen. He might be an offseason target for the Sox if he's not dealt at the deadline.
Scott Linebrink
Position: Set-up man
Team: San Diego Padres
The Sox and Padres like to deal. The Sox could use Linebrink and the Padres need offense
Mike Piazza
Position: Catcher/DH
Team: Oakland Athletics

Oswalt is indeed a long shot, but I would love a Cy Young Calibur like him on this team. However, would we want to part with Bucholtz or Bowden to get him? Lidge for Pena and Hansen would be awesome. That way, we sure up the bullpen. Tex would be an awesome acquistion, but who wants to see Mike Lowell go? Linebrink is another option for the pen.

Oswalt has fallen off the wagon a bit this year, I'd rather stay away from him. A lot of innings on that arm and tiny body and his stats are starting to show that. Maybe he's just having an outlier season like Peavy last year but I wouldn't bet the farm on Oswalt rebounding.
Can we please end the Willis speculation? He's not that good. mahalo

Oswalt is probably the most overrated pitcher in the game.
deal

My prediction is that the Sox get Texeira before the deadline. The team needs a shakeup, and if we go back to '04, we know the FO is not afraid to shake things up.
Texeira comes to Boston, Lofton comes in the deal to play CF
Lowell goes to a team for a prospect(s)
Texas gets prospects from Lowell deal, Coco Crisp, Michael Bowden and a catching prospect from the lower minors.
With all of the salary coming off the books, the Sox could theoretically extend Texeira and sign A-Fraud in the off-season. ( I know, what about Lugo,...worry about that later).
All the "experts" think we are looking for relievers, but in actuality we are looking for the big fish in Texeira.

that would be a terrible deal for texas. as a ranger fan im starting to think teixeira isnt getting traded this season b/c the pressure on our GM to net back a couple of legit prospects is huge and i dont think teams will be willing to give up what tex is worth.
that said what do other sox fans see as a deal that'd send tex to boston
Texeira

Studcrackers,
That deal would give you an inexpensive young CF in Crisp, a top pitching prospect in Bowden, plus 2 other top prospects. How is that a bad deal.
Bowden is one of the youngest pitchers in AA and he has a huge ceiling. I included him because in order to get a talent like Texeira, you must pay. The prospect we could get for Lowell would likely be quite good and we would add a 3rd prospect from our lower minors.

The only guy who even remotely interests me is Saltalamacchia. The rest are straight horrible ideas.

Willis and Oswalt- No, they will cost too much for what there worth.
Texira- Why? Why do we need him. I think lowell, and youk are both doing a fine job.
Gagne and others- Small moves, if we were to get these guys. Would be funny if we brought in roberts and we win the series again. Roberts would be forever known as a ledgend.
Ken Griffey-I want him. Said it from the beggining. I dont want to give up much, but I would love to see griffey play in center. Then you have drew bat first, and griffey bat fifth.

We'll probably come out of trade deadline day with someone like Brad Lidge... someone unspectacular.

Brad Lidge would help this team out a lot. He throws gas, Hansen could have been like him if managment didn't screw him up. I think we sure up the bullpen when Tavarez goes back into it, Piniero gets released, and we acquire a guy like Lidge

It's a signature
With the bullpen gaining depth with Tavarez and Donnely, i think we really need to focus on getting another bat in here.

I don't know if Boston's interest in Kielty is genuine, but he was DFA tonight. So, we'll see. Guess Wily Mo will soon be gone if the talk is real. I hope they can get some value for him.

We don't really need anything big, just a guy off the bench who is hitting about .275 would be nice. A la Kielty

I tend to agree. Unless they really want to give Brandon Moss a shot as the 4th outfielder, Kielty is fine. He owns lefties (.886 OPS against lefties over the last three years) and, unfortunately, anyone would be an upgrade over Wily Mo in the outfield.
