Update: Gagne approves trade to Red Sox

The Rangers would receive right-hander Kason Gabbard and an additional player or players in the deal, sources say.
Robbery. Gabbard is a #5 starter in the AL, would be much better off in the NL.

By the way, Peter Abraham reported the Sox had the "best" offer with David Murphy and Kason Gabbard earlier today. If David Murphy is the additional player, I'm convinced Theo has pics of Daniels blowing another guy. They'd be better off letting him walk for picks, IMO.

Nice Gagne!!! I hope he agrees to the deal.

Hopefully its not murphy and Gabbard. But gagne is a great arm to add to that bullpen.

Why wouldn't you want it to be Murphy and Gabbard? Murphy profiles as a 4th outfielder in the majors at best and Gabbard, while he has pitched well, throws 85 MPH with inconsistent command. He shouldn't be anything more than a 5th starter in the AL.

No, dont get me wrong, I want this trade to happen. I really like gagne. I just would rather not give up more players. Who would. Doesnt mean its a dealbreaker for me.

According to ESPN's trade deadline special its Murphy, Gabbard, and Angel beltre. And are discussing his contract with boras and gagne. Then again that could change. I hope it goes down.

Apparently if the yankees wanted him, they would have to give up one of there top prospects.

I'm getting flashbacks of Casey Fossum for Curt Schilling, while the Yanks would've had to give up Soriano. Either way, a steal for the Sox. That pen is ridiculous.

If Gagne can stay healthy that is a hell of a deal for the Sox. A real nice pen that Theo has put together.

I'm kind of nervous about giving up Angel Beltre. Wasn't he supposed to be a huge international signing last year. Hes only 17 years old.

thats the only reason i like this trade as a ranger fan b/c that kids supposed to be a potential superstar.

gabbards ok i guess but i dont care for him that much. he has a nice groundball to flyball ratio but he walks to many people.

Well, he definitely has potential. That said, he is probably at least 5 years away from making the majors and the odds are better he never makes the majors.

It is just such a crapshoot when you are dealing with 16-17 year old kids that his addition (while slightly impacting the deal) doesn't mean a whole lot to me. Keep in mind, Luis Soto was once as highly or nearly as highly regarded as Beltre and he is now nothing. Essentially, the Red Sox traded Kason Gabbard, David Murphy and 600K for Gagne. Beltre has had pretty much 0 development with the Red Sox yet and they can always go drop that money on a different international free agent. Not a huge loss, but it was still a good idea for Texas to get him included.

Anyways, thanks go out to Gabbard for what he did. While I don't see him as much down the road, he gave us very solid innings when we needed them badly. Good luck in Texas.

Beltre has a lot of potential, but he wasn't in the upper levels so he was expendable. I wouldn't say that Beltre has had 0 development, the kid has only had 121 ABs, and he has manged to put up 5 homers, 3 doubles, and 3 triples, and 6 steals in 33 games. He's got a ton of tools to work with. Sure he isn't hitting for average, but good luck finding me 16-17 year olds who have their swings cleaned up already. Either way, it is nothing that should make him a deal breaker for Gagne.

I agree with what you are saying, but I think you misunderstood my point. My point wasn't that Engel Beltre hasn't, wouldn't and won't develop but that he hasn't had enough at bats or time in the minors to develop all that much more than someone like a Michael Almanzar that the Sox just signed or whoever else they are going to sign as an international free agent.

They signed Beltre for roughly 600K so with how little he has developed (not his fault, he hasn't had the chance to yet), it isn't all that different than dealing 600K in the deal. They can and will (much like the Yanks) go out and just bid another $1M or so on another international free agent. With how far away and underdeveloped he is (because he is 17, not because he isn't a nice prospect), it isn't much of a loss at all for a team that can throw tons of money at the draft and at international free agents.

I'm amazed the Yankees couldn't do anything to stop this. They gave up garbage and a high risk future player in Beltre for the best set-up man in baseball. And not only do the Yankees not get Gagne (or Dotel), but they also trade away their workhorse in the pen in Proctor. I just don't see the Yankees being all that dangerous now unless that offense goes double uranium for the next three months. mahalo

Sweet deal, I guess. Especially if Eric Gagne is a Type-A free agent at the end of the year and he nets the Sox two draft picks. At worst, I'd say he'll be a Type-B.

Take it for what it's worth, but Edes said that he will be a Type A next season during the pre-game show. Even if he doesn't, a comp pick and an extremely deep bullpen in the playoffs is worth a fringe lefty, a fringe 4th OF, and a 17 year old Dominican. mahalo

Actually I really like this trade. Gagne and Papelbon are going to be death in the playoffs. Games will be over after the 7th.

Plus Okajima isn't that bad, either.

Well nothing officially came out of Cashman's mouth because he would never say it, but there were rumors of Clippard, Marquez, and Gardner. But those rumors were basically pure speculation, but Cashman did say that Texas was asking for somebody who would be in the rotation next year or a current position player. That means Hughes, Joba, Kennedy, or Melky. It's pretty ridiculous to ask for that and then take mid-level guys from Boston.

Theo Epstein has a pretty convincing smile, though. That's key in these exchanges.
