Clay Buchholz to pitch for the big club Friday?!

Post#1 » by Dirty Water » Tue Aug 14, 2007 8:30 pm

Terry has stated that he doesn't want Beckett and Schilling pitching on that Friday (why?!) so a move to option up Buchholz may be done is being reported in the papers. I think it's not a bad move. Looks a little desperate from an outside perspective, seeing that we have to make a roster spot for him. DFA Pena? I don't know, we still have to make room for Keitly too? If Lester has a less than stellar outing again we might see him back in Pawtucket.

Does seem a bit odd to not just keep the rotation in order with the off day on Thursday. As for Lester he is really going to have a hard time messing up his roster spot. Although if he does get bombed tonight I suppose there is a shot. However, I'd assume a trade goes through for Pena, making a roster spot for Clay. Then Clay gets sent down and Kielty gets the call up for game 2.

Lester is not ready to be in the big leagues right now. Gammons was on the radio today and he speculated that it takes about 12-18 months to fully get your strength back, similar to TJ surgery's timeline. Lester stopped chemo at the start of the year so the fact that he is pitching in the big leagues is remarkable but might be a bit rushed. I'd rather have Lester optioned to AAA for the rest of the year and have Clay ride out the rest of the year in the rotation. mahalo

If there is one thing that I have learned as a Yankees fan this year it's that calling up your best prospect is not desparation. Hughes was called up at the age of 20, and Joba moved from A ball, to AA, to AAA, and now is in the majors in 3 months (he missed all of April). If the guy is that good, and Buchholz seems like he is, then he is ready. Give him his shot. Also, he is older than both Hughes and Joba, so that can only help him. The Sox are obviously in a tight pennant race, not just for the division, but the wild card as well if the Yankees tighten this race up even more. If Buchholz proves to be a better option than Lester, which should surprise nobody, then why not do it to help the team?

EDIT: The only thing that I'm not sure of is whether or not Buchholz has an innings limit this season. That can play a role in the decision of course, do any of you know?

155 seems to be the consensus. They have been limiting his innings in recent starts. If he gets called up for Friday's game, he's make between 6 and 8 starts between Friday and the end of the season. If he averages 6 innings a start, that's between 36 and 48 innings. He's already at 117ish so 6 starts would put him at his innings limit. He might get skipped at the end of the season if the team has a healthy lead (like his last start) and they may move him to pen to limit his innings. Once you get to the playoffs, you only need four starters anyway. Plus, while I like the idea of limiting guys innings early in their career, I don't think jumping from 120 or so innings to 165-170 is going to ruin his career, especially when his limit is at 155. Plus getting it up to 165-170 might set him up for being able to pitch close to 200 innings next year without having a drastic jump in innings. I worry more about a Verlander type jump, which was from 130 to 200 regular season and playoff innings combined. That does worry me. So if we can limit his innings and use him out of the pen here and there, then he should be go for next season and help the team this year. mahalo

Apparently Ellsbury is coming up for Friday as well. How long he stays and what the corresponding roster move is is up for discussion, though.

Maybe this is the end of the Wilfredo Modesto Era.

Has to be, I don't know where these roster spots are coming from unless someone is headed to the DL
