Francona looking for an extension

According to one major league source, on Tuesday Guillen received in the neighborhood of $12 million for the next five seasons, even though the White Sox have been major disappointments this season.

Francona also was aware that Joe Maddon, who was in the opposing dugout last night, recently had the two-year option on his deal picked up by the Devil Rays, taking him through the 2009 season.

Francona is going into the final year of the two-year contract extension he signed in March 2006, one reportedly worth $1.65 million this season and $1.75 million in 2008. (He also received a $650,000 signing bonus that made the total value of the deal $4 million.) Customarily, teams satisfied with their managers don't let them enter the last year of their contracts, essentially placing them in lame-duck status. In 2006, the Sox acted even though they held an option year on Francona for 2007, in part because Francona was paid in the lowest quadrant of big league managers.

Yesterday, Francona spoke carefully when asked whether his contractual future had been discussed. "I think my answer is, I refer you to [general manager] Theo [ Epstein] in this," Francona said.

Epstein last night did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment

They guy needs to stop being such a playes manager and needs to put his foot down. I'm surprised he even said something to Julio Lugo when he didn't run out that ground ball in Toronto that cost us a run. I say the Sox push hard for Tony la Russa, get Tito the hell out of here

Buchholz needs to start

Wakefield's era is over 4.70, and he has lost it. His cold streaks can not be afforded anymore. Buchholz is the better option, experience or not. DFA Wakefield, the guy is usless for this team .

When we let Grady Little go, we should have brought in Mike Hargrove.

Yeah maybe he could have quit on our team too.

Tony LaRussa, Mike Hargrove? LOL.

Why not try for Sam Perlozzo too? Try to get the three worst managers in baseball on the same staff some how.

How is Mike Hargrove a bad manager? Remeber all the great teams he coached in Clevleand? LaRuss has won world series titles. Sam Perlozzo... uhh the hell with him, but you get my drift.

yup. the only reason larussa won last year was because injuries mostly prevented him from tinkering with the lineup as he most always does. and when he tinkers in the playoffs his teams tank. hargrove was great in cleveland but bombed in baltimore and abandoned the mariners midseason. no thanks. i'm fine with francona.

Hargrove had an uber-talented team in Cleveland over the years. They were so talented they traded away a young Brian Giles because they didn't have room for him. I think his floundering in Baltimore and Seattle were more indicative of his talents that his ability ride out possibly the most talented core team in the mid 90s.

Tito frustrates the hell out of me sometimes with his decision making but he is good at what he does and with all the talent on this team, the best type of manager is someone who trusts his players and will let their true talent rise to the top and he keeps everyone happy. And he has done a considerably better job in using Papelbon this season (although his abuse of Okajima still worries me).

And OMGWTFLOLZ at your hatred of Wake. mahalo

yeah but they were never able to close the deal in either of the two World Series appearances (though a lot of blame including omar vizquel's goes to jose mesa for #2).

i agree nobody has done well in baltimore since the cal / brady anderson era, so he'll get some type of pass... like anyone who coached the knicks after van gundy and before zeke (don nelson, lenny wilkens, larry brown...).

but his departure from seattle was a bit of a red flag... that and he hadn't accomplished much of anything with the mariners. so maybe the indians success wasn't so much a result of hargrove but in spite of...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying hargrove sucks because I honestly haven't researched him enough to say so either way. But to claim he is a better manager than Tito when he had an equally talented team for years in Cleveland but never won a title, which Tito has, and hasn't done anything since leaving Cleveland? Well, that just seems silly. mahalo

i actually thought you were saying the opposite about hargrove. i was just augmenting my point about how i prefer tito over hargrove. carry on :)

I seem to play devil's advocate with people who take hardline stances. I don't think Hargrove sucks, I don't think he's good. But because someone took a hardline stance that he is better than Tito so my natural reaction was to e-fight him on it. I do certainly think that Tito is better though. mahalo

Should have brought in Lou Pinella when we had the chance last offseason

What? Why?

Fire Francona and bring in Lou? Stop with the madness.

Pinella and Manny Ramirez is not a good mix. Not to mention the Boston media.

While I disagree with some things Francona does, he's gotten the job done. There is no reason to not have him back.
