Correct me if I'd heard wrong but it sounded like on WEEI that this is a sports writer's idea for a trade.

Boston to Minnesota - Coco Crisp, Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz

Minnesota to Boston - Johan Santana

The idea of this trade was compared to the Kevin Garnett trade the Celtics made this summer.

Thoughts?

thats a LOT to pay. maybe if they could replace either Bucholz or Lester with a couple lesser prospects id be all for it

Not to mention that Santana is coming off of a sub-par season in which he'd regress. But, he's young and a lefty. So, the trade off for Boston could translate into having a pitching staff that boast two aces next year. Still, you've to wonder if his value has taken a dip after this season. Boston, if interested, might prefer to see what Santana's market is if he's indeed placed on the block.

To end the mindless speculation that will be filling the airways in the coming months, this is what it will take to get Santana:
Buchholz
Ellsbury
Brandon Moss
another prospect, possibly a Ryan Kalish who has high upside but is only in low A ball

The Twinkies want young, cost controlled players. They also are looking at position players as well. So dumping crap like Coco on them won't work when Ellsbury has already taken his spot in the line-up and makes a fraction of the money and who's bat is already better.

That being said, I wouldn't do that deal. Maybe if Santana were locked up to a longer term deal or if the market were not so screwy that he will net $20 million/season. He's had a heavy workload and no signs of injuries but his stats have regressed slightly the past few seasons. He's also a flyball power pitcher, which always worries me a bit at Fenway.

But don't worry, the Yankees won't give up Joba or Hughes and the Sox have a much deeper farm system in terms of B grade/mid level prospects and are considerably deeper in terms of position players. So the chances of him going to the Yanks are slim and none unless they part with one of their big two. mahalo

The Red Sox ownership and franchise are wealthy figuratively and literally speaking, but one thing that they're not is desperate. A franchise that has won a national championship twice in four years can balk at such an asking price.

A desperate team will ask for that much and then some. An even more desperate team one that thinks for the short term would consider that change over.

Fortunately, Boston isn't such a team or so you hope.

If Buchholz, Lester, and Crisp got the job done and Santana would sign an extention then it was nice to know you Buchholz, welcome to the club Johan Santana.

However I think it costs more than those three as Chach pointed out.
